maybe its so when the checkout operators are scanning your shopping they can do it super fast - faster than you can pack!!

Thing that gets me is why are the bar codes so wide? The precision laser used to read them are less than 1mm in thickness, yet the bar code is what 30mm wide. I mean thats the equivilent of a woman trying to park a car in an empty high street, and struggling..........what am I saying  I understand why now :giggle:

Do the manufacturers think that the people using bar code readers are that docile that they cant get a 1mm wide red line within a 10mm space.

Correct, big gold star for you. It's because we have to go so fast. Also most of Aldi own products have more than one barcode, which helps the till pick it up quick, as we sweep the items through rather than point them at the reader, this also allows us to be fast.

It's clever packaging - the barcode only has to be about 1cm in height to be read, but you would have to hold that in perfect orientation, whereas one which is 10 or even 20cm long has an excellent chance of being read while being passed over.
Most stores reduce the barcode to a more discrete size so that they can fit on more artwork and words about how good the product is.
Aldi and Lidl know that their customers are more interested in price than being wowed by claims of how amazing the product is, so they have sacrificed the normal bs to make scanning quicker.
In my opinion, this is a good idea, although the queues always seem to be huge at these stores anyway.

The queues go very quick though, don't you think?
