Bit of help finding a surround sound system?

I've looked and looked but to no avail, we had a cheap 5.1 surround sound system before and it worked great, it fell down after about 2 years. What we want is a similar thing again, but all we can find is home cinema kits that come with a dvd or blu ray player
We already have a TV, Blu Ray player, sky+HD, PS3 and 360.

All we want is a 5.1 surround sound system that has optical or hdmi input and dolby digital decoder, only problem is, we have no idea what to look for or search for, all we can find is systems that come with a DVD player. But like I said, we don't need a dvd player.

So yeah, what do we search for? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

best place to look for this is amazon (there's 6 or 7 different ones)

though you may be better off just buying one with a dvd player and not using it/selling it as it'd give you much more choice

Would that work? I mean, I thought about that but will the decoder be in the DVD player or the bass box? Also it has to have an optical input?
So, do these home cinema kits just add a dvd player and a cable to connect the dvd player to the surround sound, or is the DVD player actually part of the system?

Or the Samsung one on here which is a bargain but bare in mind has been delayed since ages, should hopefully be out end of month!

Both are all in one systems.

Both have HDMI video and audio output. The Onkyo has on board HD decoding.

So with all your devices I would advise:

PS3, Blu-ray & Xbox 360 all plugged into receiver via HDMI, this will carry video and audio. SkyHD via optical cable as it does not support HDMI audio out. Then one HDMi cable from receiver into TV.

Or if you are looking to spend more you can go the separates way for far better sound quality.

also depends what your budget is as well... you can go for these all in one systems or splash out a bit more and get everything separate ie home cinema av receiver and speakers all separately.

Richersounds is always a good place to start though

I believe you can connect your surround sound straight to your TV through optical connectors if your current dvd/blu ray player doesn't have an optical out (as most TV's do)

Anyone else confirm this?

That samsung one looks perfect, be nice if there were a few more specs hanging around though, the samsung website is less than helpful. Does look good though from what I can tell, downloading the manual to see the specs but it does look pretty ideal. Don't think we could warrent spending £300 on a sound system though lol. I guess it's one of those things where you have to see (or hear) the difference to believe the extra price is worth it.
Plus a release date would be nice, I'll have to keep an eye out for it. :)

I would check out www.avforums.com
Those guys are really up to date with their AV and even have a bargain buys section.
If you post up on there too they'll be a big help too!
