the place im currently staying at has blocked megaupload from working, even if i use a proxy the page loads, i then wait the 60 seconds but either the "download" button wont appear or i get an error. secondly when i try to use bit torrent it wont login in/ connect to peers.

can anyone help me with free alternatives? not limewire as its full of viruses

You should be able to get round the bittorrent block by changing ports.

not really just wanted to be able to dload mega amounts :-D, it seems all megaupload type websites are blocked.

BT says DHT waiting to log in

EDIT: then after a few minutes it says 0 nodes, even though the torrent has 100+ seeders

Since you're highly unlikely to be able to open up incoming ports you're really only looking at outgoing connections, change the default port as suggested by Bingo83 then require encryption.

In most cases this will bypass any filtering, but not guaranteed.

I find µTorrent to be quite capable :).

doesnt seem to work

tried rapidshare with driect downloads instead?

gets passed most bans as it is seen as a normal file d/load also have u tried running u downloads (not b/t) via a web proxy instead of one u manualy configure like 'the cloak' etc??? this should bypass the bans as the server banning you would only see thecloak.com (or whatever it is now ;-) ) and not megaupload etc maybe slower to d/load but should get the job done

Whoever configured their internet might have placed a very strict filter on outgoing connections, limiting them to certain common ports (email, web, messenger services etc).

If so then you're almost S/O/L when it comes to torrents.

You could try using a http tunnel software. Whilst at uni halls I had to use one for torrents although rapidshare worked so I stop using torrents. Tunnel software should fix it, if you try it please let me know if it works or not :)

Try this one or find another one similar to it:
