Black or White/ Half caste or something else?

Question arose tonight. Are British "Black" people unhappy at being called "Black"? Would they rather be called "People of colour"? or do people of mixed origin prefer to be called " half-caste/mixed race"? Do we acknowledge people's origins correctly, or do we just stereotype because its easy? Do we care if we offend?

The new's folk keep on calling them "black" people, dont know why.

People are people , dont know why they bring up skin colour.

Also whats the deal with BET channel? "Black Entertainment Television"...

Seem's a bit dodgy to me, dont see no "white entertainment television".

Honestly, who cares?

Screw anyone (black, white, purple) who looks for offense when none is intended.
#9
Black green pink or white.
I think if people really want to be classified it should be based on ethnic background i.e. African, jamaican, indian, chinese etc i mean saying Black people is not the same as saying Asian i.e call them Yellow people and you're asking for trouble. Know what i mean?

I'm with you on this Martin17. I question other members as the subject got pulled on another thread. I don't think that Britain has the same "Black" issue as the USA does. I wonder how people look at our government and our culture and how they "assimilate" Black/Coloured people into our hierarchy. Is it possible?

Who cares? I'm fed up of changing every other day, most don't care anyways, it's just white people in parliament who think they're on a freedom fighting mission, when all they do is make people annoyed and increase hatred.

Are you stupid or what??

There are issues with race in parts of the US and in parts of the UK... I went to NY for three months and never had anyone look at me funny and I had the best time ever.

I went to a bar in brighton and almost got beat up cause I was chatting to a local girl. Same thing happened in aberdovey (spelling) in wales when I was chatted up by the barmaid. this time the guys had snooker cues...

So its a little short sighted to mention thoughts of such issues for the whole country...

I would agree that there is racisum in the Uk but my point is y shood there be any. i am a english man living and working in wales in a very welsh area and have no trouble with the locals

I think Affirmative action, in the US at least is a fairly big issue aswell.

Who cares? In my opinion nobody has the right to not be offended. Including myself.

Sad!

What a well thought-out response.

'Sad' would define someone who spends their days looking for offence where none is intended, patronising human beings with ridiculous 'PC' categorisations.

Some of the ways we're often supposed to socially define other people just creates segregation.

Want to ban the word Christmas because it may offend non-christians?
#18
Surely it's preferable to try not to cause offence? Saying 'no offence was intended' is a cop out!

Because that would be WET :)
Seriously most programs in this country reflect the white majority population so why shouldn't other people have something that reflects their interests/roots/culture. If I were in the USA I'd watch US programs but I'm sure I'd watch BBC overseas as well because I would find it interesting and relevant to me and my interests.

well in my experience, no offence to anyone 'cos i really couldn't give a kahuna burger as to who u are, what colour u are, what sexuality, or what you're religion is! As a white, born and bred english lass, i think i'm in the minority nowadays, and i'm sick and tired of being PC'd out! Take people as you find them, whatever!

Point is in the 21st Century is ethnic origin relevant or geographical location of adopted homeland. The sooner we think of ourselves as euro brits or euro italians or euro whatever then so much the better and there would be less differentation to deal with.We seem to be able to do this when supporting our national teams or voting on euro issues but not as a society. To say who cares? is dismissive without airing the subject and without constructive comment .Although i agee tha t" no one has the right to be not offended "(you cant keep all the people happy all the time) we clearly have not matured enough as a species to appreciate the bigger picture. After all "Do oceans have walls ?"

It's often white, sandal-wearing, liberals who use political correctness to look for offence. It makes them feel superior to the "plebs" that they look down upon in their pseudo-snobbery. In reality most people of different races/creeds/nationality are chilled out and accepting.

To answer the original question, I found this poem written by a black American

"When I born, I black,

When I grow up, I black,

When I go in sun, I black,

When I cold, I black,

When I scared, I black,

When I sick, I black,

And when I die, I still black.

You white folks....

When you born, you pink,

When you grow up, you white,

When you go in sun, you red,

When you cold, you blue,

When you scared, you yellow,

When you sick, you green,

When you bruised, you purple,

And when you die, you grey.

So who you callin' coloured folks???"

I will keep it simple, as this thread will descend into misconceptions real quick(It may have already).

Being "Black" is more than a colour.

Sainty unless you elaborate on this you are leaving yourself open again :) I know you dont give a damn though x

my brother Corey (adopted brother) is 5th generation British, but he is "classed" as mixed race. He is no more black than I am white. he is more of a brown colour and I am biezey pink, I suppose (unless Ive been in the sun). All of this colour typing is irrelevant and divisive. He is my brother, thats it. he is not my brown, black, mixed race brother. That would be putting him into a different box to me and he isnt. It has all gotten ridiculous in my opinion.

Further,
How come we can have the MOBO's for example, isnt this a black music award? Imagine if we had the MOWO's - music of White origin awards. There would be an uproar, question is by who. I come accross name calling sometimes in work but never the utter hate that was prevelant in the media. Corey just wants to get on with things. he isnt offended by what he calls banter with his mates, so what entitlers someone else to be offended on his behalf? In law a racial incident can be percieved as such by anyone, it doesnt have to be the party it is aimed at
In work we have a Lesbian and Gay association. We also have a Muslim association. Can you imagine having a "White heterosexual male with no particular religious belief association" I wonder what would happen...............

Why differentiate? Just hate everybody no matter what 'colour'

I think he is dissapointed that no one so far has made any deviant racial slurs - so introduced something that may do so.

Anyway - I'm classified white. I feel offended by this tag. I held a peice of white paper against my skin and its totally a different colour. I'd imagine its the same for "black" people, "yellow" people when they do the same with their "tone" of paper.:p

In seriousness, It's just a term. In the US "African American" is used to describe their race / colour. Personally, that could be conscrued as a reference to the slave trade, which could quite conceivably be classed as a slur. However, its not taken as one and neither should the terms "white" or black"
#32
On one issue: I do find the term 'coloured' dodgy.

It sets the benchmark that all are 'white' except those of colour who are 'alternate' - kinda like an away football team strip.
#33
Not out to offend anyone here but the way i see it is :

White, Black, Yellow, etc are just generic terms to describe majority and minority groups.

Now if they were call Honky, N*****r or Nip, etc .....that would definately be wrong as it's taken in a racist context which implies hatred.

:)

Quite correct. Though it baffles me why its ok for a black person to use that term and be ok - and if someone called me a "Honky" I'd laugh at them - even though it probably would have been used in a negaitve way.

Searched round the house to define my colour but couldn't find a really good match..........not white as i go out of the house, not mahoganey, nor pink...........closest match i could find in the immediate vicinity was Pine.

So from this day forth i shall enter Pine on all questions of colour and if anyone challenges it then i'm off to kick up a stink at the court of human rights.
