Not sure if this has been posted, but google have launched a black background version of google, called http://www.blackle.com/ BLACKLE .

It has been suggested that using a white background uses more energy and that a darker background would be more, well, green :giggle:

Was reading something about this recently and I'm sure that it said on modern tft type screens it uses about the same amount to make a pixel black as it does to make it white. Not 100% sure but it was something along those lines.

Also it says each time you open your internet explorer you'll save energy. A bit debatable, if I open internet explorer 100 times have I saved energy? Also it takes longer to read a page therefore your screen is on for longer.

It assaults my senses.

It's supposed to be easier for people with sight difficulties to read light text on a dark background. Looks terrible to me though lol.

Bookmarked, Cheers, A lot nicer than the bright white google!

Used it :)
Black = Off, Any Colour = On!
So I guess-timate (swift intake of breathe) it saves0.000000003 watts per hour, my maths may be a bit iffy there! ;)

It's a bit weird, doesn't feel google like. None of the useful links, like images, news etc but it's my new home page and we'll see how long it stays :)

No it's not launched by google - it just uses the google engine (which anyone can do by making a custom search)

Knew I read it somewhere before:

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/08/is-black-new-green.html

"We applaud the spirit of the idea, but our own analysis as well as that of others shows that making the Google homepage black will not reduce energy consumption. To the contrary, on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75% of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. Detailed results from a new study confirm this."
