The brand isnt the major important factor its the dye that is the crucial point as a rough visual guide look at the underside of a disk and the darker the dye the better quality. Ive had various brands of discsand the quality can vary from batch to batch. If you use a lot of discs get friendly with the seller (i get discounts and freebies from my man on the market) they will let you know which brands are currently good, I tend to stick to aone and bulqpaq (vertabim for 360 backups) and get excellent burn to coaster rates, in the last week ive gone through 40 odd dvd -r and had just one coaster (and that was my fault - forgot to drop burn speed down to 8x).

DVD -R should be fine for burning films from your pc to watch on a dvd player, never had problems yet with that format, maybe a poor batch of discs is to blame or you are trying to burn at too high a speed?

I remember I had a lot of trouble with discs on my Wii and old DVD player etc.

The best brands are Verbatim and Taiyo Yoshi (or something along those lines) as they provide the perfect balance between price and quality ;)

DVD minus is the regular standard used by dvd's but if you are using a dvd video recorder to record the disks you may need the dvd plus disks for compatibility reasons, personally I use cheap 15-20p dvds with a PC, disks made using Ritek ink or taiyo yuden are the ones to look for for quality.
