Thanks but the water level is at 1 which is what I was told it should be on

You may have air in the system this can make some strange noises as it goes through boiler - you could check for any leaks around radiators - radiators do need bleeding occasionally and check the pressure on the boiler assuming its a combi they usually run about 1.5 bar and often need a little water added from the loop pipe.

I would recommend anyone to get one of the £12 - £15 a month deals to cover boilers as when they go bang and they will they are ridiculous prices to fix and if you get a cowboy doing it he will take your money and it wont even fix it properly - british gas are excellent and you can join and they will look at the current problem at no extra cost. and they will come & keep fixing it as many times as it takes - piece of mind.

Cheers I had a similar problem last year, I turned it back on and now it lost all the pressure so ive filled it back up to 1.5 and its not making the noise but im not sure its heating up either, the pilot light is lit but it doesnt sound like the boiler has started
#5
ok, the pressure is not going down again but we have no heating or hot water, it doesnt seem to be 'kicking in' although the pilot light is lit
#6
most men would be pleased if their old boiler were making rasping noises :p
#7
All the boiler posts involve so called heating experts telling you to top the boiler pressure up. On the majority this will only cause problems if really low (below 0.4).

Could be a problem with the pump.

time to trade in for a new model
#9
May sound daft but check the boiler HW or Heating stat. They may be low therefore not kicking in. What boiler is it?

its an optima ferroli or something, Ive turned it off using the button you press to light the pilot light so the pilot lights gone out, now when I turn it back on the pilot doesnt light up and when I press the button to light it nothing happens

thanks for your help

I dont think gas is getting through, the pilot light lighter doesnt even spark when i press it in, when I turn the boiler to heating and hot water nothing happens, when I turn the hot water on I can hear water pass through the boiler but nothing else, thanks.

The boiler still hasnt lost any pressure since the first time.

Ahh, just turned it back onto heating and hot water and it made that rasping noise again for a a couple of seconds but then stopped, the pilot light still isnt lit its not making any other noise
#22
in fact I can now hear like a pffffft........ pfffffffffffft........ pfffffffffft sound and the boiler is losing pressure

Do you have credit on the meter (if its that type).

Don't know if you have a manual or not, or that it will help, but there are some downloadable manuals for the Ferroli here ;-http://www.ferroli.co.uk/Download/index.php
They have troubleshooting at the end.

Don't think they are taking anything out on anyone. Just trying to get a bit of sensible advice to help em out.

Thanks but my model isnt on there from what I can see.

the pressure dropped about 2 bars but seemed to go back up to normal. still no pilot light, no noises at all coming from it now apart from what sounds like water passing through, it doest take credit.

Is there electrical power to the boiler? What model is the boiler? Some have an internal glass fuse. If blown, no electrics to circuit boards.
#31
I dont know if there is power mate, its a ferroli optma, when you turn the boiler on the fan is supposed to kick in after 20 seconds, but the fan doesnt come on, twas a cold one last night ! :(
#32
Is the pressure relief pipe frozen up outside? I know mine has a sort of copper pipe overflow going out through the wall? Just trying to cover all possibilities...

Does it have a reset light or button anywhere on it?

this may have been mentioned, my mum has had a similiar problem last week, ended up being the pump which needed replacing, anywho hope it helps somewhat and that it gets fixed in time for your Xmas, have a good one.
#37
If there is no power i.e. no warning lights, no electrical display, no ignition, no pump circulating etc, I would first check the fuse which should be connected to a spur. There should also be a second fuse inside the boiler on or near the circuit board but this may be out of your realms.

Blokes been round to have a look, he's condemned the boiler, whoever fitted it didnt fit the right size 'exhaust' pipe and there was a ten mill gap stuffed with tin foil ! could have killed me !

now cant afford a new boiler and the getting the old one fixed could cost hundreds, one things for certain, going to be without heating or hot water right through christmas.

May be worth getting a second opinion as to whether the boiler can be repaired. Can he not replace the pipe with the correct one? Can the gap not be filled? Did he say what was actually wrong with the boiler as to why it is not working? Which component is defective? Too easy to condemn something.
