I usually use thetrainline or crosscountrytrains, but I think national rail have a 'find cheapest option' on their home site now too!
iirc, its 12 weeks before the day of travel
USUALLY 12 weeks (less one day) but on some high frequency routes can be less than 12 weeks. am currently waiting for advance fares down to London and they are still not available at 10 weeks and 2 days prior.

As a tip it is always worth looking/comparing fares on different train operators websites. I tend to use the Cross country train site quite a lot - they often have Virgin fares at lower prices than on the virgin site itself (bizarre!!). For long trips it is often also worth breaking the journey down. Coventry to Bournemouth for example it is often cheaper to book Coventry to Reading then Reading to Bournemouth ON THE SAME TRAIN but buying 2 seperate tickets.

Another fare saving tip is to book long distance trips from "MAIN" stations only. then purchase seperate tickets from your local rail station to that one if necessary. We saved over £30 on an advance fare in the summer by booking this way (then paying the £1.50 return fare to Coventry!)
