Bought an Xbox 360 from tesco and.........

Its happened to my son, the dreaded red light thingy. It works intermittently but its only 7 months old. I have rang tesco customer services (and electical) departments and spoken to several stores. The customer services told me to ring the electrical and electrical told me ring the store or to get into contact with customer services and then the stores all say they have none and that they have received a message about the red lights and there is a special number to ring. No-one know what it was though:x

Anyway i looked on tesco electrical online and they seem to have them in stock or at least it takes the order, (i presume they do) and i have asked a store if i buy one from online can i get a full refund for the items from tesco upon returning it. I told them its less than 12months old so would they do that. The lady i spoke to seemed to think they would. Is there anyone here that would be know as i don't want to buy another and then they refuse to refund.

Forget Tescos, register the console with Microsoft and get a replacement sorted, they will pick it up and deliver it repaired or a replacement, usually the latter.
#2
claim the warranty, i'd imagine tesco would just tell you to do the same.

he will have to wai 4weeks to get it back, even then it could be a refurbed one, he/she should be entitled to a new one since it been less then a year.

Take it back to your nearest store and explain that you would like a replacement. They are usually pretty good with things like that as they just send them back to their supplier anyway.

This takes around 3 weeks though. That is why i wanted to get a refund via the store.

You may wait 4 weeks, but you have the chance of getting a newer one and possibly the HDMI model (not Elite), which is what happened to me. Although the issues with XBL with a new console are a pain in the bum in regards to having to be on-line for games which have been updated on the HDD.

Also the 3rd Gen models supposedly have the issues ironed out, so a better investment IMO.

The 3rd gen are still having issues. The most reliable one apparently is the Halo special edition one which is slightly different to the newer Pro & Elite.

This is the one (realease date august 2007) that i am thinking about buying from tesco direct. I have just spoken to customer services again and they have catergorically stated that i am entitled to a money refund instore as they have none in stock. I spoke to the store and she said there was a phone number to ring about this issue. I am not sure what to do as i haven't got the money to stand out 2 consoles if tesco store will not refund over this. Its so confusing.:?

Well the choice is yours really, start the ball rolling with MS, wait until Tesco get some stock or source a Tesco's that does have them in stock.

In all three events you all will get a replacement.

Take it to the store and demand a refund.

Your contract is with the supplier not the manufacturer, it is down to them while it is still within a warranty period.

I assume you have the receipt as lack of receipt is the only reason they can tell you to contact the manufacturer.

You may have to demand to speak to a manager but do not be fobbed off with having to return it for repair/replacement.
#12
I would find a Tesco that has them in stock and get a replacement, you'll get a shiny new one straight away :)
#13
Incidentally, has the price changed much in the last 7 months since you bought it?

If you paid more for it back then it may be best to get a full refund and then buy one of the deals on offer such as the HMV one as you will get a whole year warranty again and maybe some extra games all for the original price.

Got the receipt. I am on my tenth phone call now and its two hours later. I cannot believe the different stories i get from each department. I have called the store now and each time someone puts me though to someone else and it then rings off. I am going to make a complaint. I am so annoyed with this.

I have bought an Elite for smy son for Christmas, do they get the red ring problem as well?

If it were me I'd take it back to a store I know has no stock, and as they can't replace it immeadiatly demand a full refund and go buy one from somewhere else. The deals you can get now are much better than the ones you would have gotten 7 months ago .

Spoken to the store again and they will ( the lady says anyway ) exchange for the elite which is the same price he paid for the 360 premium. Just have to wait and see this evening.

They all suffer from the same problem, some more than others, the newer ones are better. Microsoft now cover the machines for 3yrs against this fault so I wouldn't worry too much abuot it.

NOTICE - if you have a HDD and XBL you will have issues with any DLC also how are you going to migrate your data from that HDD before your replacement?

Would you say the elite from tesco will suffer the 3 red lights thingy too. Are these machines better than the old ones as having googled it it looks like they eventually mess up too. Am i right. :?

Thats been answered in the posts above but your HDD data will need consideration if you have any purchased content, saved, games etc. All I'm saying is a Elite replacement is cool but I would suggest removing any data from your current console before exchanging especially if it has a Xbox Live Login.

IMO you will have less post replacement issues with a like for like swap bar the HDD if you have Xbox Live but that is a personal choice, but with respect I don't know your technical ability with such things.

Watch out that if they are doing an exchange that they give you a new receipt with 12 month warranty, some places that exchange get away with only allowing the rest of the warranty period on the original receipt to run, so less than 5 months in this case.

I would do as I said earlier and get a complete refund and buy one of the deals elsewhere, there are some good 360 deals on at the moment and new versions with less chance of breaking down.

How do you know which are the new versions. :)

This is where I step back and let a techie type answer.

I know my consumer rights but can barely programme the dvd player, if it breaks I can argue a refund but can't fix it!

They'll say something about falcon chips, hdmi and wattage info on the box and possibly shining torches into grills or something ( this all learned from this site :giggle: )
