Bought Faulty Furniture on Argos - Need advice please

I bought a solid pine dining set table & 6 chairs on Argos recently (it was posted on HUKD reduced from £250 to £110).

It was self assembly and during assembly I set aside 3 damaged or poor quality chair parts. This meant I was left with 5 chairs instead of 6. I rang Argos and they told me they would send out replacement parts when it comes back in stock. They now tell me 6 weeks later the item is discontinued, and my options are to buy a different table/chair set to the value of £110 and if it costs more I send them a cheque for the balance. Or they can collect and refund.

The problem I have is I cannot buy another dining set for £110 on their website as they are all over £250. Secondly I dont want them to collect and refund me as I spent 4 hours (hard graft!) assembling the set in the first place.

I would like to keep the set and could manage with 5 chairs but what sort of refund should Argos give me if I went down that route?

Any advice appreciated.

can you replace the chair? if so then ask them to pay for it.

perhaps you could get the chair repaired and send argos the bill, check with argos first to make sure they are willing to pay it, then find out how much it is going to cost

They have already told you what they have to offer by law.

You are now at the mercy of their manager. I had a similar problem with Focus last year. I purchased a garden set which was reduced from £350 to about £150. It was poorly built and 3 benches collapsed. I argued what you are saying and they said, as I knew at the time, what they had to offer me by law. Ultimately they managed to find stock and replaced it.

It went over 300 degrees on HUKD so I guess it was a bargain. I can't buy another identical chair as it is discontinued. I could buy a different chair I suppose but would need to buy 6 which is expensive again. The faulty parts I have cannot be repaired as one of them is side of a chair which has a through hole drilled 10 mm out of position and results in a badly rocking chair. Plus other bits are wrong size.

I think I will ask them for £30 or £40. I'm more annoyed they told me that I would get spare parts and now they say item is discontinued, plus I went to a lot of effort making them up, which is my lost time if I returned them.

Yes, though I had my tea in between! Table was a 10 minute job. Chairs a bit of a nightmare consisted of 2 sides, front seat section, back seat section, and about 6 slats on the back and the seat. The slats were a pain to get in as they were too tight. They did not supply glue also so I added glue to all joints to make it more robust which took time.

So it probably was in about 1,000 pieces then!!

Take my advice. They might offer a small sum of money for the faulty chairs but once you accept their offer you run the risk of not being entitled to anything should the rest fail. Personally, I would get a full refund of your money and look elsewhere.

I think I might just go for a full refund. I was thinking of asking them for a £20 gift voucher as a goodwill gesture as they have messed me about big time, initially telling me I would get spare parts and then saying I wouldn't. I think that would be fair.

If you go for the refund good luck doing disassembly if you have added glue, if this wasnt part of the instructions any damage you do disassembling my mean they offer you less than you paid due to the damage.

If you know the name of the table and chairs it may be worth doing a search, because other retailers do sell the same things as Argos especially Homebase, also you may find a chair on Ebay, then Argos may pay for it.

You would get a refund?!? £110 for the set - you aren't going to get anywhere near that price buying another set are you?
Even if you go and buy another set for £200 then you have paid £90 to have an extra chair - is that really worth it to you?
If it was me in this situation I would just try and get a little extra something out of them as compensation and maybe try and bodge the chair together so that it looks good as a set but just don't use it LOL! :D

May be you could argue a "loss of bargain", which if successful could see you with compensation or them paying the difference for a different set?

Good luck with that. Entirely disproportionate to bring a claim for this.
