its a trend more than a necessity mate, theres no need to not have brakes on a bmx, old excuse was that the cables get tangled when you spin the bars, but with rotors and stuff now they have worked round that so its just a fashion thing..also very dangerous to ride on the streets surely? skate park etc fine, but what if a car comes across his path quick

should be able to fit a standard brake yeah whats his reasoning for not having any? i used to bmx and a back brake with a rotor on is absolutely zero hinderance in doing tricks etc

his "reasoning" seems to be that everyone at the park has brakeless ones-I had no idea it was brakeless when he ordered it-I foolishly assumed all bikes had brakes.

gonna take him to the local bike shop for brakes after lunch-will feel much happier about him being out and about once thats done.

yeah its just a recent fashion thing mate, no need for it in the slightest, ask him what he cant do with a back brake and rotor fitted that he can do without :p

or tell him he has to walk it to park before he rides it in there lol

yeah but do you go on the road with it?

just found out that it is illegal to ride a bike on the public highway (includes a pavement!) without 2 brakes

http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=4073

Most sorts of cycle are required to have at least two efficient braking systems, by which the front wheel (or wheels) can be braked independently of the rear wheel (or wheels). This means that if there are two wheels at the front or rear, the relevant system must act on the pair. It also means that the combined operation of front and rear brakes from one lever is not allowed except as an extra braking system: additional to the two independent front and rear braking systems required by this law.

Think we all forgot what it was like when we were kids, oh the fun we used to have without brakes , skidding with foot on back wheel etc.
Should let our kids live a little.

Awesome looking bike.
Brakes would ruin the look of it.

it may well be a little if they use brakeless bikes on the road.

How would you feel if your kid died cos he couldnt stop in time at a junction, or worse still caused a fatal accident as a car had to swerve?

Used to ride without brakes when we were kids, on streets roads etc and we are still here to tell the tale.

Doesn't look so good like this though.

At least they had a crash helmet on , still didn't save them.
I think we are too cautious these days that's all I'm saying.

Yeh mate, but was usually a case of the brakes being broke, worn or couldnt afford to replace etc, this is a brand new bike purposely with no brakes, like i said...fine for the bike park, big no no for roads with the nutters about these days

I here what you are saying, but I don't think the road, or even the path is somewhere for a bike without brakes.
A purpose built park, then yes.
I never rode a bike without brakes anywhere, and I can't remember any of my friends doing it either.

I would be mortified if I hit a kid on a bike with my car, regardless of whether he had brakes or not.
I just don't see the point of pushing your luck.

A friend of mine lost out to a car when he was 8 years old. He thought he run across the road before the car got there. What a waste. And that car driver has had to live with that ever since.

Yes kids should be kids, but in the right place.

Kids need boundaries, physical and metaphorical.

Can understand the teens who wanna have fun with these bikes though.. they're just stretching their skills and exploring how much they can get away with.

as for the legal position question, it's illigal to ride without a helmet on the road, and without lights if it's night-time, but how many kids do you see breaking both these rules? i suspect the answer is lots and lots, and the cops are very unlikely to pick anyone up for these 'crimes', so i wouldn't worry about that much. but it is very dangerous, though saying that, i used to ride a BMX with no - brakes and i was fine, the risk adds to the fun!

It isn't "illigal" ar kid. Lights are a legal requirement (at night obviously) but not a helmet

Rotor? Bmx? :?

Personally (and if i could ride a bmx properly) i'd not go brakeless, its pointless

And i certainly wouldn't let a child of mine ride without brakes, fashionable or not

Its better to be uncool than dead
#22
nah, you're right, just checked it out and it's not compulsary.
and as for the rest of your statement/rant jumpingphil, yeah, course I disconnect my car brakes as soon as possible after the MOT. it's absolutely ace. ( i'm humouring you of course ).what a ridiculous suggestion that was.
but yes, the risk adds to the fun, that's why they make BMX parks etc with big ramps to ride on, the thrill of taking a risk, pushing the boundaries, testing yourself.
i take it you've never taken a risk, had any kind of thrill, or tested yourself?

we do try to discourage kids from indulging in spontaneous risk taking behaviour though lol

no worries man

haha, well yeah, that's fair enough.

I think a lot of people have missed the point here. put brakes on so he is perfectly safe riding to the park, that's all well and good. but riding up half pipes and doing jumps and tricks etc. ain't exactly safe either. The most likely place to have an accident is the skate park, and that will happen with or without brakes. I expect that he'll use common sense, and ride within his limits on the road, knowing that he has no brakes.

Rotor? Bmx? :?

gyro, rotor ...whatever theyre called these days, the things that let the handle bars spin without getting brake cables tangled up

Are you telling me someone can predict what every other road user is going to do.
I've been driving for more years than this kid is old and I still am amazed at some of the antics some people get up to on the road.
Riding on the road without brakes is just asking to throw your life down the toilet.:x

or worse still, throw some poor innocent's life down the pan cos some nutter cant stop in time.
