got an 06 honda jazz

recently serviced, honda said front pads were 90% worn, rear pads were down to metal.

quoted about £180 or so for front and rear pads and rear discs.



a local garage, dependant on whether the discs do actually need replacing, have quoted between £75 to £120 or so


kwikfit said around £140 (dunno if this included discs) but they have a (supposedly) lifetime guarantee so would mean - supposedly - no more brake expense as i intend to keep the car for ages yet.









what is best? go with honda for genuine service/parts (originals lasted 37.5k miles) or go for a cheaper option

cheaper option will be fine, with the local garage or kwikfit.

The lifetime garuntee is on workmanship i would imagine, not on wear of the disks and pads

discs £30-£50 a pair....pads £20-£40 a pair so not bad quotes really....

I agree, the local garage will peobably get the parts from the same place as Honda, but wont charge you a premium for so called 'genuine parts' !!!

Insist on decent parts, but Honda ones aren't essential.

Get Mintex pads, I think that's what Honda actually use.

no - according to the kwikfit guy, basically when your pads wear out, you get free ones fitted

only exception (which is what makes me dubious) is if a fault with braking system, such as leak on cylinder or stuck piston or whatever, causes the brake problem

wow thats a cool deal, altho ive had a few cylinders go on my over the years. Guess it depends on how many miles you do a year to see if its worth getting the kwikfit ones, and if yo have a high wear rate it may be good to get free replacements in a year or twos time

Personally I think you are better off with genuine brake pads for longevity. Get any decent mechanic or competent diy'er to fit them. There are lots of inferior quality pads/discs around that will only last a short time. You will only have to shell out again for the labour required sooner rather than later. As for trusting Kwikfit to fix your brakes for for as long as you own the car without making a profit...... Yeah....Right...:whistling:

Honda do not make brake pads, but they do not use the cheapest pads available to maximise the profit to be made by supply/fit as some garages will. The pads do not need to be oe but an oe item will be of good quality.

As will lots of other pads, without the Honda sticker which will add 50% onto the price.

Have you actually priced the pads from Honda?

I bet they're not much more to buy. If you have a supplier handy and are buying the parts yourself then Mintex or EBC would be good too.

All I'm saying is I could probably get a set of pads for £15 to fit your car but for an extra £10 or so spent on quality parts they would probably last more than twice as long.

No, have you? I know with my cars in the past (non-Honda) that genuine pads are always a fair bit more expensive and clearly no better than most aftermarket products. Plenty of decent pads out there for far less than a main dealer will charge you. Personally I don't waste money in this way.

Pads are down to the metal and as such the discs may be scored?

The OP asked for opinions and I gave mine. I'm not here to argue.


If you just want to take it in and get it done I'd be inclined to spend the extra £40 and get the work done by Honda which looks good with your service history come resale and you will be good for another 37k on the oe pads:thumbsup:

Seems something is not right here - the rear pads wore quicker than the front. You might be right in that they need replacing due to metal on metal, but it doesn't explain why the pads wore on the rear faster than on the front!

You could have a point there actually. I agree the pads on the front normally wear quicker. Maybe there is a lot less friction material on the pads on the rear:?

Saying that I've noticed loads more brake dust appearing on the rear wheels of my new type r than the front :?

Same on my car, but I can't find a fault myself (nor can my garage) - I blame it on the electronic handbrake though and how that releases.
