Hi guys,

I have a buddy at work who NEVER stands up for himself, he rarely gets to take his breaks and sometimes skips lunch!

He is legally required to get a break right?

He doesn't want to work through break but as I say he simply will not say that he needs his break. Also on sick days our company always phones us during the day to try and get us to come in.

It's a call centre so nothing life threatening if we ARE off!

Even worse, I work with people who never take their full holiday entitlement each year. They must think they are so indispensible that the organisation can't function without them. Chumps.

I have and always will take every break, holiday etc that I am entitled to.

Been a Chef for just over 20 Years & I like lots of Chefs are not Guaranteed a Full 20-30 minute Break even for a 12 hour shift.Crazy I know but that's Life & we just need to get on with it or look for another job.

Just needs to stand up for his right. Depends on what colleagues are doing as well. Are others having breaks? Also it's employers jobs to be a pain when people are ill as so many take the mick. I have just been signed off with pneumonia and work rang me to ask of I could phone some customers from home!! Gotta love them.

There's a guy in my place who's the same. He'll skip breaks too, usually taking only fifteen or twenty or so over the course of a 12 hour shift (and often coming in over an hour early) just to get his figures higher than anyone else's. I don't know why. He doesn't get paid any extra, and it just means that his co-workers resent him for making them look bad, while management look at him like some sort of a crazy.

It is annoying - I had a boss who never took full entitlement at breaks or holidays and he expected the same from us. I do not mind occasionally taking a shorter break or indeed no break if it is necessary but I would expect the same thing in return from the bosses if I need an extra long break.

What we did with the old boss was to find a way round this - he liked badminton so we took it up and invited him along! Suddenly our lunch hour changed from 20 mins to 80 mins. Take your buddy out for something that cannot be rushed, or encourage him to do something that will use the time up.

Crap meaningless job then take every break possible. Proper jobs/career then that's a different kettle of fish.

Here's the official line on VDU's & breaks....

HSE

I work in scheduling & planning for a call centre, and we ensure that every employee works no longer than 2.5 hours in front of a VDU without a break.

Is the lunch break which he skips paid or unpaid?
#19
it would be paid, thanks Ollie........sorry I mean Kamaya!

call centre workers get a break everytime they phone me.... they usually sit there on hold for 5 mins before i hang up :p

Uneducated people on power trips in management cause the majority of problems in call centres. Did sales when I was a bit younger and I think it was one of the most stressful things I have ever done.
#22
just to clarify it's not outbound calls
#23
unpaid breaks i take regardless off staff coverage etc. Paid breaks really depends how i feel and if the situ allows me time away. Is your buddy paid for the entire time he is in? An 8n half hr shift at my work only pays 7hr 45mins
#24
lunch is not paid time, so ranges from 30 mins to 1 hour.

well they really need to make sure they are not working and on a break for that period. We dont work for free ya know! They not a charity

He's heading for a burn out unless he starts taking some breaks.

Is there any particular reason why he volunteers to work through his lunch etc?

man up OP and grow some balls and tell management your taking your breaks

the company handbook should explain all this.
#28
it's not so much volunteer as he gets asked all the time because they know he will just agree. i'm pretty sure the manager has an 'issue' with him.

If managers or supervisors want to complain about people taking breaks then thats their problem as people are entitled to them. Don't answer the phone to them if you are off sick.
