I have been looking to upgrade from a compact camera for ages now. I've always been thinking I would get a DSLR.

My fiancee used to have a 35mm SLR so is quite competent with cameras. Most of our pictures are while travelling so don't think we're that keen on lugging around multiple lenses. I don't mind spending more for something better, but was hoping someone might have a recommendation. I'd like to spend less than £500.

Should I buy something like the Lumix DMC-FZ38 or splurge for something like the Canon EOS 500D DSLR? The thing I like about the Lumix is that it is small, light and no need to carry around a couple of lenses. But I don't want to be disappointed and feel like I need to upgrade my camera in a couple of years again.

Please help! Thank you.

I've been looking at the Olympus SP-590UZ which seems to have had a lot of favourable comments recently since launch. I can't comment on the Canon, but know that there's quite a few group tests of the Olympus and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 on a few websites that I've googled...

I've had a similar problem, so know where you coming from on this about being disappointed about a potential purchase..

I have a Canon 20d, had a 60mm macro lens mounted to it for nearly a year now, I love it

i'm very happy with my canon sx1-is (bridge) camera. it does everything i need for family pics and doubles as a good camcorder. yeah its good not having too much stuff to lug about though i'd recommend an external flash for indoor / low light shots.

i may upgrade at some point to a dslr but i'm not in any rush. i guess your choice depends a lot on what you'll use it for.

Ended up going for the FZ38. With the low price and rechargable battery it seemed like an easy decision. Now just need to source out a small case.
