British Gas advice needed?

This isn't a deal, but I'm after a bit of advice. In March I called British Gas as there was a £300+ debit on my account. At the time I was paying £18.50 a month for Electricity. I spoke to customer services, and the chap advised me that there was no need to amend this or panic, as they carefully estimate these figures and the summer usage would absorb this debit.

Was happy with this and carried on paying my bill every month.

So, fast forward to yesterday when I got an letter advising that they are amending my direct debit from £18.50 p/m to £95.00 p/m.

Obviously I can now see I need to pay off the debit, and am happy to do this over the next few months, but given the fact that my usage hasn't changed too much, does anyone have any ideas as to where I stand on this, and if I should be escalating this matter?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Would phone them up and ask to pay over the year rather than 4 months.

But at the end of the day, as long as the bill is right (have you checked?) then you own them the money and !they could ask you to pay it sooner!

dont they reevalaute your payments on every bill (every 3 months) if so after 3 months it should go back down

make sure you have firm/actual reads and not estimated ......

Look on energywatch website to see any regs available ....

check british Gas Policy online also ........

I had a similar situation. But I was able to pay off the amount due in one lump sum and haggled with them to reduce the monthly direct debit to be met half way between the two and more in my favour of what I could afford monthly. They were willing to a point. So that is an option you could broach with them. In the end I paid up and then came off DD and paid the bill quarterly. Since then I've switched to capped and am back to DD.

also there will be a social tariff available if you are on a lower income you may qualify ....

They may be able to put any debt on hold while you pay for your usage only and then write some off after 6 months if you stick to the arrangement......depends on money coming in an going out to qualify tho:thumbsup:

The problem isn't so much paying off the debt. Just the annoyance that I need to fork over the extra £70 a month for four months, as they didn't esitmate, or recalculate the monthly payments. And when I questioned this, it still wasn't changed. Upon looking into it, from our usage, we should be paying £40-50, so their estimations are way off.

Sassie > This is what they are supposed to have done, but they missed this for the last 2 quarterlies? And its 6 months down the line whan I've been handed a much higher bill.

Benjimoron > Is annual cheaper than monthly or quartlery? How does this work?

I mean just spread the payments over the year, ie a direct debit of like £40 or something so you pay it off over a year.

Remember you basically have some of their money so whether they should have charged you months ago doesn't really matter, you've been earning the interest in that time.

its just another classic really.

When they want money from you, they will do what they can to get it super quick.

When you overpay, try to get it back lol. . .

If it were me I would cancel the DD and get bills, pay them when YOU want to.

I have recently changed to the click energy tariff, and even with all the current media energy hype and price increases, I have saved a third off my bill.

Everyone, check what tariff you are on!!

I've spoken to British Gas this morning, and they have apoloigised about the advice I was given in March, and will raise a complaint against it (for all the good it will do!?).

Anyway - I was told that if I pay £95.00 a month for 4 months, the debit will be paid off in full. Although I don't think she was too bright as she didn't calculate that we'd still be using electricity in this period! So, I'm going to pay off the debit and then shop around.

Any ideas for good plans / companies?

That would assume the amount was £380?

If it was £300 then she's taken that into account.
