British Gas price fix

British Gas has put up their prices by 35% starting immediately for gas.

However I have been on the phone to them and they have extended their price fix guarantee until cob today (Wednesday 30 July).

So if you can get through to them before 8pm tonight then you can get the prices fixed at yesterday's prices rather than today's (35% higher and 9% higher for electricity)

Phone them on 0845 955 5300

dirty, money grabbing B*stards:x

I've actually just moved to British Gas from EDF. Do you know if I would be eligible for this fixed price deal too?
#3
Please explain? How can I get them to keep current prices at yesterday's prices and for my bill not to go up? Thanks
#4
I'm with BG and found ScottishPower to be cheaper.

Time to switch I guess with £72 cashback via Quidco :)

Phone them on 0845 955 5300

Use 0800 0281028 - ignore all options & stay on the line.

you ring them up and tell them you want to go onto the capped tariff (for 15 months) make sure you ask them if you'll get the price before todays rise (plus 9.8%)
#6
Sorry to be dim, but what exactly will calling them up achieve?
#7
Just swapped from British Gas to Scottish Power capped tarriff yesterday!!
I agree, they are all money grabbing B*******S!
#8
Have british gas put it up 35% today,,,hence if we join british gas is it @ 35% rise or @ before this rise?

it will achieve you a significant saving.
if you do nothing you price for gas will go up today by 35% but if you phone and get it capped it will go up by 9.8%
#10
looking at their website it says fixed price 2011 does that mean you still pay for the 35% price rise?
#11
fix to 2011 @ high prices? Don't think so.
Has the 15th month deal fininshed?
If you are going to fix, ask what freebies they will give you!!!
#12
ive checked website it says it went up today so loks like your fixing @ 35% price tariff so boooooooooooooooo from me
#13
see also martin lewis site it says already gone up too
advises scottish power fixed till 2009
#14
...as far as I was told this morning when I called to go onto their fixed rate, it is 9.8% above their standard rates for gas & electricity, fixed until the end of Dec 2009.
#15
thats what i was told this afternoon as well.

if you go for the 15month cap you pay 9.8% above yesterdays price
if you go for the 2011 cap you pay at todays price
#16
My bills are still in my ex husbands name, does anyone know if i'll have a problem trying to cap, im on the phone to them now, been on hold for 20 mins so far

the 15m cap was say 10%, more than standard. which is more than the click5.

the 15m cap is still a good deal if available

Had to stay for more than 30 mins.. use the free phone number in the previous page - at least you dont have to pay to hear the annoying messages :)
#19
Managed to cap, todays the deadline apparantly, so i'll be paying 9.8% price rise instead of 35% price rise.

Just spent 31mins waiting and eventually got through!!

Representative told me prices have changed today.

Capped 2011 is the only one on offer now, well done to people who got in early:thumbsup: because that price plan doesn't exist anymore.!!!!!

The new capped until 2011 is available as of tomorrow via phone or now via website, didn't know why the delay on the phone application. There is a 70 pound cancellation fee for gas and 30 pound for electricity if you cancel early. Protected from price rise but if the cost goes down (some chance!) the price you pay will go down. Obvioulsy you pay a bit more on both fuels on this price plan.

So looks like either change supplier and wait for them to increase or go capped until 2011
#21
Hi I took Martin Lewis Advice and did a price comparison, My current provider being British Gas, the cheapest capped that came up was Scottish , followed by British Gas. I opted to Cap with British Gas rather than move company, Did it 2 days ago, Thanks god i did!

Call them back i spoke to someone only half an hour ago, they offered me the price cap of 9.8% untill dec 2009, be quick they shut at 8pm
#23
I got through just before posting this and they gave me the cap until 31 12 09 at yesterday's prices (so without the 35% extra - means about 6.75p instead of 8.3p for gas for me).

Maybe they have taken it off now but it was meant to be until close of business today
#24
Why are you wasting time ringing call centres?

I just capped ONLINE on the MSE recommended " British Gas Price Guarantee 2009" (i.e. the 15 month deal) an hour ago via http://www.energyhelpline.com - took about 5 mins max! Just enter your postcode and your estimated annual bill.

DO IT NOW!!

Looks like you can do it online from the British gas website.
Sorry if this is duplicate info haven't read all the other posts.

If you fix, I also think there is a penalty for leaving if you choose to leave british gas in the future - £70 for gas and £30 for electricity. I saw that somewhere but can't find it.

Thats what I thought but its at the new 35% increased prices!

Don't go for the capped 2011 do the fixed until December 2009, see the above link just done it and it works, fingers crossed:whistling:

Called the 0800 number, got 3 options which only let you enter details on their automated system, no operator access, so useless.

Called 0113 3381022 and I'm still on hold so decided to look online:

http://www.quidco.com/british-gas/
Entered my British Gas customer numbers for gas and leccy, signed up to the Fixed Price until March 31st 2011 (Dual Fuel) and hopefully will get £55 Quidco, but we'll see, more interested in the freeze that should save me several hundred pounds hopefully. Too lazy to renew in 2009 or move again anytime soon, British Gas does me fine.

DO NOT USE THOSE ENERGY SWITCHING SITES, USE QUIDCO! :)

I think you're right - it says from immediate effect. They should make these things more clear. Their bills are confusing enough as it is.

From the 'important info' section on that page;

If you cancel the agreement, either by moving to another gas or electricity supplier or requesting to change your gas and/or electricity to another of our tariff(s) at any time prior to 30th September 2011 we may apply a cancellation charge (inclusive of any VAT that may be applicable). The cancellation charges are £30 for electricity and £70 for gas. This charge will not be applied if the agreement is cancelled due to a home move.

Schizoboy, the 2011 fixed deal is at the new prices. It includes today's increases. Everyone should be going for the Dec 2009 capped deal - that is the one that is at old prices.
#37
The Eon deal is still available (2009 capped) and hasn't alterted in price since last Tuesday, although again they are getting swamped and you'll be queing on the phone no doubt. You can switch to this online (although their website is taking an age too)
#38
It gets better by the minute!!

BG have just rang me back and offered to put me on the capped 2011 at the old prices!! :)

Told them I had just signed up to the fixed until Dec 2009 and was told not to worry as this would cancel that agreement.

Hope their right otherwise it may prove very expensive!! :w00t:

So what are the prices you are paying. I pay 10.26p kwh electric and 2.62 per kwh gas. I expect your cap is twice that so thanks for the warning but I will ignore it
