Broadband advice - From NTL Cable to Virgin media and a query
Hi folks.
Rather than give computer advice, I'm asking for it for a change.
Basically my girlfriend had ntl internet/broadband/cable whatever, but then was changed to Virgin (bought out I assume). Anyway, her PC is upstairs and there is a cable box in the room which runs up the outside wall (from what I gather) which then has what looks like a coaxial cable running to her router which then has the ethernet cable running to the PC (phew).
So, with that, she wants to move her PC downstairs into the kitchen. Now, for her internet to work she has 2 options based on this that I can see:
Either A: Go wireless
or B: Run the ethernet through the floor/ceiling.
Obviously I would choose option A, however I don't think her router is wireless (still says ntl on it). Would she be entitled to a free virgin wireless box on the most basic broadband package (I assume it's 2 meg)?
I don't know all the details obviously and my info is pretty sketchy but any help is appreciated.
There is a third option of course which is to have the internet downstairs by spltting the phone line and using it that way (like the rest of us lol) but with the cable box upstairs I don't think that's possible and it seems that her broadband isn't linked directly to her phone line. Correct me if I'm wrong please :)
Impress me everyone :D

Drilling would be an issue I'd expect, looking to try and re-use as much of what's there as possible... I'd experiment with the set up though and try everything in my power before admitting defeat and getting a rollocking for suggesting drilling holes :P
The NTL man already drilled a hole upstairs anyway, so it's not like it'd be unheard of.
Either that, or run ethernet all over the house, which will a) be a logistical nightmare, and b) look crap unless it's all hidden away.

This isn't an immediate thing anyway so I've time to research and snoop around (when I'm not working, urgh).

I assume she (the house) is already paying for a phone line then? O2 is probably better but it is ADSL so you need to add a phone line rental to the cost (£11pm) - something you don't need when using cable...
From what I gather they have a range of providers for everything - They have Sky TV, BT phone (not sure on that one) and virgin internet.
Makes life a bit complicated imo... I'll most likely just have to try and blag an upgrade from Virgin and failing that get them to fork out on the box (ugh)... I had considered the line rental charges but clearly not enough.
When we finally get our own house, I'm going to have everything blooming sorted properly!
New customer though, she's an existing customer.... From ntl, so I don't even think she had a choice of signing with Virgin :p and she's still on a 2MB line, and I presume she's paying for the 10MB... Going to call them this weekend I think and give off.
Good stuff. I can't see why they wouldn't, and also can't see why they wouldn't upgrade the line as they don't even do 2MB packages now lol. I'll get something sorted for her - She's a typical "doesn't like to ask because I don't like to" person, so I'll do the dirty work. :whistling:
yep - they do give out free wireless routers if you threaten to leave. Worked for my Mum and Brother who are both long term customers.

Mac, any more info on the live chat thing? Curious to know a bit more about that :)
Just go to the help pages on VirginMedia and then the "contact us" and you will see a link to the live chat.. I've always found it only works from a virginmedia connection and also only works from Internet Explorer (but that could be due to my settings in Firefox)
Never been able to get a good answer from them though.
