BroadBand Advice/Help Please

OK, i thought my current ISP was ripping me off as my dl speeds have been horrendously low (0.4MB).

My landline is with BT (who are not my ISP) so I contacted BT and they checked my landline and confirmed the best i can get with ANYONE (even them) is 0.5Mb.

So, what are the alternatives? In my village we do not have Virgin/NTL so that's ruled out. Is there anything else?

Any advice or pointing me in the right direction, would be much appreciated! (except moving out of the village!)

Im in a little village too, i have Talktalk (for my sins!) but still get just under 7mb.

try this Speed Checker and then you can also see other options available.

Would avoid TalkTalk, I had problems after problems and they are awful if anything goes wrong. x

My problem is, i've been told by BT that whoever i go with, i'm only going to get 0.5Mb, despite what any ISP may say. Prob due to old cables. I'll check speed checker tho! Cheers!

I had this exact same problem and thought that I was stuck with BT

Wrong, I went to o2 as they have their own equipment (ADSL+, I think) in the BT exchange.

I would suggest that you speak to o2 and others and ask them what speeds that they can acheive.

I got lots of Quidco cash when changing too

I should have mentioned that my 0.5mb (BT) speed went up to 2.5mb (o2) speed.

Saved money too

Thanks Bill. I'll try O2 tomorrow.

In fact, just been on O2 website and put in my no and postcode and got this:

You should be able to get up to 0.5 meg download speed on this number. That's based on information from BT about your line.
You're outside the area that O2 Broadband covers.

Drat!!

Really there is little point bt line is still the same. (there may be a little luck involved) so you can at least try however be aware companies might not be as honest as they should when promising speeds that are unattainable eg Oh yes sir we can give you 6 meg on adsl2+) (b4 ne1 says yeah I know adsl2+ can be upto 24mbit)

what does samknows website say about the equipment at your local exchange ?

Samknows

ok, samsknows has returned lots of red x!! The only LLU operator is Talktalk (who i'm not with but my neighbour is and he consistently gets 5MB!)

So what am I looking for (sorry!!) on this site?? Here's the link:

I'd get talk talk, looks like it's your only option, and I've been with them for over 5 years and have found them fantastic, everyone I know is with them aswell and finds them great. I get a nice 18-21.5meg on mine depending on if I tweak it. Rock solid connection aswell.

Cheers - so if any other provider tells me that can "guarantee" me more then 0.5Mb, are they telling me porky pies?? If i've understood, it's only TalkTalk on my exchange that will be able to put their own equipment in, so id be using theirs directly, rather than someone else via BT?

Talktalk are the only provider thats unbundled your exchange (sky, o2 etc) must not see the exchange your served from as one that will provide a return on thier investment (it costs quite a bit to unbundle exchanges), Talktalk looks to be your best/only option other than BT. Have you looked at ring wire removal and checked your internal wiring set up (filters etc).
Also just because your neighbour gets 5meg doesn't mean you will, the cable that serves you could take an entirley different route from MDF to NTE than that of your neighbours.
#14
Thanks Paddy_o_furniture. Understand the comment re neighbour - it's just annoying (LOL!!) As to checking filters etc, i've connected directly to my BT socket and still got the same (I was told by my current ISP to do that to rule out any internal issues). What's ring wire removal??? *as I go off to check google*
#15
If your synch rate ain't improving in the test socket, ring wire removal is unlikely to do much.
#16
mmmmmmmmm ring wire removal looks interesting! Will take a look tomorrow!

Then with their own equipment and some other factors and some luck you may well get a better service with TT LLU

Good luck with it.

Had this exact problem 12 months ago. It turned out to be the junction box inside our house was old and not suitable for broadband. A bt engineer fitted a new box ( not socket ) and our speed went from 0.25mb to over 7mb straight away. I would also recommend talktalk as they are the only llu provider in our area and the speed and service is great and also cheap compared to bt. Best of luck fixing the problem

Before signing up with TT, try ringing their so called helpline first...:(

I have just told BT where to stick their landline, not sure if customer service operative understood me, I could barely understand a word she said but I have moved to TalkTalk and what a difference. TalkTalk supply my home broadband and Opal Business from TalkTalk supply my business broadband and so glad I transferred. No issues with home line apart from details I need to configure my own router but on both residential and business I had no problems at all with their Helpline. My biggest issue is communication, I never had a problem with BT moving all their call centres abroad and putting english people out of work!!!!! just when I have to pay intepreter when I ring really bugs me.

Talktalk just the same but to date 3 calls all resolved no issues and no cimmunication issue, whether a fluke we'll see but performance wise on new provider is top notch, customer service we'll have to see

The bt engineer who came out did this for free but he explained some engineers would charge because there is no fault on the voice side of the line it is on the adsl part . I had the same issues as you both my neighbours were getting 6 - 7 mb and i was struggling on 0.25mb . They changed the box and now my line is fine
