Broadband options? New line or wait for Unbundling?

OK so basically BT are crap and have not yet unbundled the local exchange yet. And I can't get virgin.

Would it be possible to get a new line with BT and have them connect it to a specific exchange - my exchange is 1mile away from me and the other exchange (with which i can get O2 broadband) is 2miles away.

What would be the maximum speed I can get with being 2miles away?

From 2 miles away? Seriously?

It's "Upto" 24mb, 2 miles away is bordering on "extremely close" to the exchange.

I'm 8km away & get 4mb from O2

No you wont. Dont listen to that.

10meg at a big push.

Usually they connect you to the local exchange, don't think they will connect you to the other one.

Other one may be full,. Would have to have a new phone number..

Erm, yes he will.....

For example.....

From O2broadband.co.uk checker:

Postcode & Tel number around 2-3 miles from O2 enabled exchange gives:

You should be able to get up to 16 meg download speed on this number.

Speeds are fine - the big problem is that BT are screwing us with their ridiculous prices and slow speeds - at home I'm about 1.6miles from exchange and get 6meg or so from O2, which is plenty.

Is it possible to get connected to the other exchange assuming it's not full?

I've never heard of anyone switching exchanges, but assuming that will be a question for BT as opposed to your ISP (I imagine if it was possible, you would be looking at a charge to do so).

I don't think you can ask which exchange to be connected to, they do whichever is either closer, or has enough pipe room!

No unfortunately you can't, I am CSA for a broadband provider and I remember a situation where this was requested.

I'm not sure of the exact reason as to why it cant be done just remember adviging the customer that it wasnt possible.

Best to ring BT. they would be the ones to advise you but am almost positive they will say no.

Damn BT! Looks like i'll either have to get virgin or wait for unbundling!

Seriously i am 3.5KM from the exchange and get about 4 MB from any service provider i have had so to excpect 18MB would be real fantasy. As for the exchange you will be stuck with the one which the checkers tell you since thats where you will be cabled to, you will have no physical connection to the other exchange.

Is that 8km as the crow flies or an estimated distance someone told you? Either way I doubt you're 8km from your exchange.

Check this site to give you a reasonable estimate http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php

These are my stats and it's pretty much spot on for a BT wholesale connection (even with a bit of SNR tweaking). On a LLU connection I'd probably expect 2.5mb, an estimation from Opal (TalkTalk) postcode checker.

Distance:- Direct: 3.73 km
(appx)* By Road: 5.31 km

Fixed ADSL: 1024 kbps (1 Mb)
DSL Max: 1000 kbps (1 Mb)
21CN WBC : 1500 kbps (1.5 Mb)

I wouldn't mind seeing your router stats too!

6k by road, 4k direct according to that site mate.

The estimated speeds are a load of crap to be honest.

Fixed ADSL:* 512 kbps (0.5 Mb)
DSL Max: * 1500 kbps (1.5 Mb)
21CN WBC : 2000 kbps (2 Mb)

I get a steady 4mb from O2 :)
