Broadband/Telephone problem

So a couple of days ago we got another Sky box fitted, bringing the total to 3. Problem is, now we have 5 things plugged into the line, 3 Sky, phone and broadband. Now ever since the extra box has been fitted we have had phone/broadband problems ( People cannot get through to the phone and the broadband has went from 10mb to 2.5mb)

So ive been researching on the net and im reading that you can only have 4 things plugged into the line, something to do with "REN"

Anyone know what i can do to resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

i have the same setup with no problems. REN or ring equivalent number doesn't really matter any more. it used to be that you caould only add up the REN on your phones to 4 and anymore would cause ringing problems. your sky boxes and BB modem won't need a ringer. make sure they are all fltered properly and a first step would be to remove the ring wire as its not needed and can cause BB to be slow

Check filters should be step 1

The engineer set up the whole lot, brand new filters on everything. It was all working fine for the first 10 hours or so.

P.S. What is the ring wire?

REN won't cause a problem, it used to be when you had too much REN certain apps wouldn't ring as it couldn't draw enough power from the exchanges 50v DC. What happens when you pick the phone up do you have a dial tone? Are all devices that require filtering filtered? Sky engineers have a horrible habit of setting filters up wrong. A filter should fall before any device (including a sky splitter). Unplug all the sky boxes from the phone line. If the problem goes eliminate one by one.

Ring wire is wire number 3 usually orange/white. Removing it can increase ADSL performance as it can in certain cases cause interference on the ADSL side of the line. Removing will cause no problems as most phones now have built in ring circuits, where by at one point the bell wire gave the phone the required voltage it needed to ring.

I can actually dial out sometimes, but people have been texting me saying they can get through.

We unplugged our boxes before with a slight problem we had, then we kept getting letters saying if they remained unplugged they wanted an extra £50.00 a month!

So this been an ongoing problem prior to today?

New electronics have been known to fail after being on for a short time.
Sounds like filter problem as suggested unplug everything and then try telephone broadband.
If this clears up problem then plug each sky unit in and test each time to find fault. (Normally filter unit)
Good Luck

Yeah. We used to have the same problem but then we got one of the boxes out.

Now we have the same problem with the new box. I told the engineer and i checked speeds and phone line b4 he left. Was all fine and dandy.

Then it comes to later on in the evening, the problem returned.

How many actual telephone sockets do you have in your house?

2

The one upstairs has 2 sky boxes with filters attached.

One downstairs has the phone, broadband and a sky box. All filtered.

To see if its within the house remove the cover of the master jack and plug just the telephone in.
If the phone then works correctly your problem is within the house.
If its still a problem then its an outside fault and you can call the service provider and get it fixed

Rubbish, as suggested below use the test socket with just your router and 1 telephone.
Your set up, how many filters you using in total?

5 Filters? How many phones you got. Where is your router plugged in? Do you know which socket is your main socket/NTE5

Done it using 2 filters, can you manage a set up like this? I can't understand why you have 5 filters

I will take a pic of the downstairs.

Upstairs is 2 sky boxes , both filtered and in one socket.

Can you take a pic of upstairs also, interested to see how that is done. May be that thats causing you problems, over filtering can be as bad/worse than no filtering.

Camera just bloody died.

You can imagine the upstairs. Double adapter and 2 sky lines in it, each with a filter.

Blimey thats a mess. You only need one filter there. How long is the RJ11 lead (the one that goes from the filter to the router).
#25
Remove everything, plug a filter into the phone socket. Put the RJ11 (router cable into the filter) the splitter on the left put into the phone part of the filter, plug the other splitter into where the phone is plugged now. Plug the phone into the other splitter.

this is going to be trial and error, i had a similar problem and found that my phone that was on the extn cable like the one with the bb required a filter at the far end not where you have it ( do not know why) i used a filter on every phone at the phone end and problem solved, and i have 2 sky boxes 3 analog phones 1 digital phone and router i daisey chained some and split some at the far end so only have 4 plugged in to my master socket .So in summary just put seperate filters on at far end.
