Broken Mobile Phone Help needed please ...

Hello - my son's LG mobile phone has broken. I bought it at Xmas from Orange. We use a pay monthly SIM. He is a teenager and it has moderate use - but he never uses it in the day as he is at school and the phone is home. He uses it mainly for texting (but is is one of the text friendly phones with pull out keyboard) and makes very few calls.
It has broken. Just stopped working last night - we were on a day out - his Dad phoned him to find out what time we would be home. He spoke to his Dad and when he went to use it a little while later it was not working and now seems to be totally dead- won't switch only or anything....
So we have had this for 7 months. What can we expect when I take it back - will they offer to repair it. Not sure what the warranty is on phones - is the same as per regular electrical items - ie one year.
PS Have taken out no extra insurances on it ...
Thanks for your advice.

Its most likely the screen is dead, you will most likely have to buy a new LCD screen for that phone to replace the dead one. You can purchase a new LCD screen for that phone from ebay. They will most likely provide you with a specific screw driver for that phone.

It should have a twelve month warranty ,After six months they usually send it back to the manufacturers for repair, The only time i have had a problem is if it was never registered with the sim that it came with,

It's still under warranty, you should be ok. Unless they can prove that you somehow caused damage to it via water, throwing, dropping or something, they'll repair or replace. Generally been my experience with phones and I go through 3 a year.

you can ring orange who will advise of 2 options >>

1st option, call manufacturer and arrange to send to them to try and get replace / repaired

2nd option, Run diagnostic fault check, if deemed faulty you can take orange emergency insurance on it now for a next day replacement, charge should be around £30 for replacement and insurance @ £6.00 monthly

Have a look here;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/theoneshow/consumer/2009/07/03/sale_of_goods_act_letter_downl.html

You can download letter templates from The One Show for items under 6 months old & items over 6 months old.

Orange used to carry the warranty for the first 6 months, after that they send you to the manufacturers.
Not sure if it's changed but if you call CS (150) they'll give you all the info...

go to the carphonewarehouse website and check if there's a repair centre near you....
if there is, just go down there with proof of purchase (or the letter thingy they give you at the start of the contract with your details and the phone's imei) and they can repair it for you gratis and with far less hassle!
normally, its done within a few days or if they can't fix it, they send it off to the manufacturer.

if you take it back to the shop they should ring cust services for you, if it was purchased at the shop they will arrange to send to manufacturers as over 6 months old, unless u take the emergency care replacement over the phone for a next day delivery & a charge :(

I do have one near me - but I did not buy it from CPW - I bought from the Orange shop - does that make a difference?

Thanks again - you are all so helpful. I am really grateful for all the pointers.

Don't really want to pay out any more if I can help it - the phone has gone down quite a lot in price and is free on some contracts now - almost wonder if it worth "upgrading" my monthly pay as you go SIM to a contract to see if they would give me a free phone in that way - what do you think?

nope it doesn't. the carphone warehouse are authorised repair centres for most, if not all, makes of phones.
I took my sony ericsson k850i there when i was having trouble with it, and that was bought off ebay!! (if you get a nice person, they'll often ignore your lack of proof of purchase too lol)

+1 take it to carphone warehouse:thumbsup:

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Took the phone to CPW repair centre - they were more than happy to do it - but advised that I pop into Orange to see if they could replace it ...

Orange could not replace it - it would be sent off under warranty and we would have to pay £15 admin charge.

Guess what we did - back to CPW who will aim to repair on site and FOC under the warranty.

Again - many thanks for the advice - I would be at least £15 worse off if I had just gone to Orange.
