Broken Xbox 360 - help please!

Can anyone advise?, my sons 360 seems to be broken, it loads all ok but then seems to get stuck on a game we just have vertical lines on the screen. No red rings or anything and we have tried brand new games and get the same. It's fairly old and i'm not sure we have the receipt. I have heard lots talking about returning them, how do I go about this? and would I be able to without a receipt?

Help would be appreciated, thanks and Happy New Year!!

I've repaired loads of these, and I know the problem.

Vertical lines etc means that the console is on its way to RRoD (red rings)...Essentially it's caused by the GPU or CPU (the former in this case) overheating and melting the solder tracks, hence causing it to lose contact with the board....

It won't last much longer...

Microsoft will repair an RRoD console for you for free if its in warranty...You get 1 years warranty, but if you wait until it RRoDs they extend the warranty by 3 years...

To do this you have to ring them up...and they will pick it up for you, takes about 2 weeks.

How does the rrod warranty work? My console is just over 1 year old...no issues yet but would be good to know what to do when it eventually gets rrod!

Go on the Xbox 360 website...goto Support and navigate about to book a console in for repair..you have to enter the Serial number etc etc, and follow it through from there...otherwise just ring them up.

A courier will pick it up...they repair it...send it back to you

as other person said it on its way to 3 red lights RROD
but i thought they only repair it after 1 year if its got 3 red lights or error 74
so get your kids to keep tring it
it will keep freezing and then you will get 3 red lights
maybe i am wrong can someone else shed some light on it
you can alsways give microsoft a reing at the call center
just google the phone number

It's always 3 years on 3 red lights and E74 errors :-)
No need to call them.

@ chas76, I personally would leave it on permanently until the inevitable RROD happens then send it back for repair.

On a similar subject, before Christmas we went to Toys R Us in Stockport and their Xbox360 was sat there with the RROD flashing away to itself. Great advert for someone to buy a brand new one when the shops own display model is already broken!!

yeah but as the OP said its not showing any red lights yet just freezing
which is why i said give them a call as the freezing is the start of the RROD

my local tescos had 2 on display in their pods both with 3 red lights
i am surprised no one has made t shirts of the 3 red lights, as that would be quite funny
