BT - Call charges and advice!

We are trying to reduce our BT bill, there seems to be a wide variety of choice, I wondered how the total cost stacks up based on our usage and if anyone had any clever ideas. Firstly, we will be staying with BT, so it's what ever we can do with them to lower it basically. (That doesn't mean VIOP via skype etc is out of bounds)

Total Bill (for a quarter):
£114.16

Broken Down:
Calls: £53.39
Rental: £44.51
Payment Charges: £4.50
Credits: -£2.55
VAT £14.31

The call breakdown is then (roughly) as follows:
Daytime: 75 calls, 5 hours, £19
Eve and Wkend: 30 calls, 4 hours, £6
Mobile: 80 calls, 3 hours, £27

It then seems the charges of £44.51 come from:
£32.60 Charges in advance for unlimited weekend plan comprises line rental
£11.91 Charges in advance for BASIC ValuePlan

The 4.50 is a payment processing fee

So yeah, that's roughly it. To me it just seemed expensive that it's 115 quid for 12 hours calls. 12 hours calls over 3 months is pretty light usage I thought!

So, is this just the price these days, or do we have some stupid plan options, or alternatives.

Suggestions / comparisons / advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Pay by Direct Debit, save £4.50.

Save the £4.50 fee by paying by Direct Debit - thats the 1st saving. Then change onto the unlimited calls - daytime, evening and weekend plan - £4.95 per month so all your calls will be free from then onwards. That will save you a few quid too. Based on the bill you have just given...

Daytime: 75 calls, 5 hours, £19
Eve and Wkend: 30 calls, 4 hours, £6

This would have been £4.95 x 3 months = £14.85

Therefore saving you £10.15 plus £4.50 if you pay be Direct Debit.... saving £14.65 on this bill alone. Hope it helps!!

Keep my bill to a minimum with BT. Basic line rental which includes free calls evening+ weekend.
Call mobiles only from my mobile using inclusive minutes. If I have to call in the daytime, or abroad, I use 18185, which is a separate subscription. Very cheap 5p connection charge for UK, then free. Most international calls very cheap too. I call Greece quite a lot and its only 1p per minute.

Yep direct debit too

£48.60

Thats for
3 months line rental
3 months Unlimited Anytime Plan
Paying by DD and getting bills online

Your bill will be

£48.60
Line rental
Anytime calls to local and national landlines
Inclusive calls to 0845 + 0870

The only way you can increase your bill is to call the following.
International calls, mobiles at the rate of 7p per min (half price) and prem rates

Your bills will be cheaper

Have you looked at the BT anytime call plan? It costs £4.95 per month and you get your calls free that would save you a small amount.
Callimg mobiles from landline is very expensive - BT have a mobile call saver option to save 40% of the std rate - this costs £1.50 per month, alternatively I only call mobiles from my mobile using up my free minutes etc. that saves me a fortune every month.

Thanks people, we were looking at the anytime plan, which is what sparked the discussion.

@Starr - Thanks, that's a very clear way of putting it.

I get the calls and I get the 4.50 direct debit. The line rental is still a bit of a mystery to me though.

£32.60 Charges in advance for unlimited weekend plan comprises line rental
£11.91 Charges in advance for BASIC ValuePlan

So, we would just scrap both of those when moving to the anytime and be paying 4.95 and 11.25 pm, hence £48.60.

So, in essence, moving to the anytime plan, and going via direct debit, with the same volume of calls as this bill would be around 75 quid?

VAT must factor into it somewhere, if that's on the total 75 then that will be 87 quid. Still quite a saving over £114.

The mobiles at 7p - is this not something you have to pay for?

@MAIA - I'd never heard of 18185, I'll take a look at the site.

We have PAYG mobiles as we don't make that much use of them, so call charges to different networks are stupid expensive.

It seems this 7p or 18185 is the best you can do for mobiles via a landline? - I looked at Skype and Voipcheap too, 20p and 8p each per min for mobiles, so nothing to write home about.

Thanks for the help guys :)

That basic value plan is calling features, you need to get that removed.

£11.90 for caller display and call waiting something like that

With the prices i stated in my earlier post those included VAT

Per Quarter
£33.75 - Line Rental
£14.85 - Anytime Plan
£48.60 Inc Vat

Mobile saver is included in the anytime plan so you dont have to pay extra for it, that enables your calls to mobiles at 7p per min.

If you took away everything from your bill that you dont need your last bill would of been £62.10... CRAZY

Unless if that bill you were looking at was for more that 3 months

Yup, the bill was definitely just for one quarter.

That's quite some saving, which will mount up over the year. Ah well, with these savings in the bag and knocking 50 quid off my Dad's car insurance (with an unlikely but possible £60 quidco) it's been a fairly productive bank holiday!

Thanks again Starr

Definitely no chance of changing from BT?

Tiscali offer much the same service: inclusive calls to landlines and wotnot, with broadband and line rental, all for £19.99/month all in.

OK it doesn't include 0845 etc., numbers, but I get alternatives for most of those I call from www.saynoto0870.com

If you have SKY switch to there Phone service.

http://packages.sky.com/speak/

Switching to there £15 a month unlimited calls including line rental will only cost you £180 a year or £120 for evening and weekends with line rental @ £10 a month

BT also give evening + weekend calls for free which include 0845 + 0870 numbers and choose free mobile saver which will make calls to mobile 7p per min

Calls with other providers dont offer anything BT cant so not really worth it unless you are taking your line rental as well. Maybe you should think to switch your calls back? you can still use 18185 during the day

lol, my dad phoned BT today and got through to what I gather was a fast talking sales rep, keen to sell him stuff and not explain it very well (in broken English). Ended up he's gonna send us three options in the post or something lol.

I'll look at the details, but I'm sure we registered online last year some time to mess around with friends and family, perhaps we can just handle it all online! (Here's hoping ne how)
