BT signalled ambitions to dominate the mobile market yesterday when it rejected a cheaper, simpler takeover of O2 to open exclusive talks to buy EE, Britain’s biggest mobile operator, for £12.5bn.

It brought down the hammer on a three-week reverse auction in which Telefonica, the owner of O2, was competing against Deutsche Telekom and Orange, the joint owners of EE, to offer BT the most attractive terms......

I'm not convinced BT has rejected the O2 deal outright. I think it may be more a negotiating maneuver. However, O2 is in a strong position with 3 also said to be interested in the company.

It would make more sense for them to buy EE as EE has the more modern network and will also include both Orange and T-Mobile customers.

Very true. However BT are looking to invest. Therefore it may make more sense to buy O2 at a cheaper price and then invest in it, rather than invest in a company which is already very well developed.

I can see Deutsche Telekom increasing their existing shareholding in BT through this deal, leading to an eventual takeover of BT.
