BT Line Rental rip off

Hi all,

Moving into my first student house this month and am trying to sort out the internet for the house.
I was previously looking at the £10 a month for 16GB internet from O2.

I've now been told that the house doesn't currently have a BT phone line. Does this means I'm going to have to spend an extra £100 over the year getting it installed? How does this work? Will it be cheaper if I get internet with BT? Is O2 broadband any good - heard any praise/horror stories?

Lot of questions I know but just trying to get this sorted out!

Cheers!

yeah you need a bt line so you will have to pay for a bt line to be fixed to your house and then pay bt £10 a month for the line rental.
Yes o2 broadband is probably the best, bt broadband is good but very expensive..

Whatever route you chose, you would always have the line rental aspect to take into account.
#3
Remember also that it is usually a 12 month contract.

Get mobile broadband with 3. Half price line rental too onsome plans and quidco

£124 for a BT installation then £10 per month rental then £10 per month to o2. total for initial year £364

Doubt you will get 16gb though.
#6
sky will pay for your bt installation if you take out a contract.

Can you get Virgin Media in the area?

You can check your postcode here:

Avoid BT Internet at all costs.

Check the contract term with any ISP, some are very long.

I have BT internet, no issues at all here, infact just renewed contract and on top package, for 6mths free then £22.99 per mth, plus new homehub sent out to me.
I would probably say if your with BT for braodband they may waiver the fee for you, they did for us.

£ 22.99 a month, you can get a decent ISP for less than that.;-)

No stitch in contracts or throttled lines either.

Me too - I was 4 months into an 18 months contract and phoned them up to say they were too expensive so they gave me 6 months free and then 12 months at £14.99 on the 8MB package if I took a new 18 month contract and they sent me the new black home hub.

of course I accepted - was already in a contract with them for 14 months :whistling:

never had a problem with BT though but if I did they have free calls to helplines etc unlike some ISP's

Yes, you will need to pay £125 for installation BT charge. Both BT and O2 are 1 year contracts. O2 internet is brilliant...best choice for cheap internet

Since you are renting, just talk to your landlord and he/she will likely be willing to split the installation cost with you.

All my speeds have been fine, never had one problem to call helpline....it worked out same cost as O2 as they arent in my area and i have no O2 phone to bring the price down.

So basically sticking to what i know, am happy with. Also with there all inclusive phone calls for an extra 14.99 it works out cheaper than sky for phone calls, so for £38 a mth i get steady connection, all phone calls included and im happy, better than the £80 per mth i have been paying them previously for phone calls, bb and line rental, plus get 2 phone lines as with hub its an extra number. TBH cant go wrong really especially as its saving me money.
One thing i like about the hub has its own firewall in it and it has the new "n" technology for wireless, so future proof.

£80 per month :w00t:

I think that must be some kind of record.

Just to ley you know, you can have a line installed for £29.99 if you go into an 18 month contract with BT for the line. I just ordered mine for my new house. Not many of the sales agents know much about this offer, but just quote it to them when you ring up. I think it expires end of September.

Even so, you were getting ripped off I;m afraid. never heard of anyone paying that amount.

I pay £15.50 for line rental, 2mb unlimited broadband and free evening and weekend calls with VM.

Let us know what the installation is like. My brother had to take 4 days off work before they finally turned up. Took 3 months from order to correct install. He had 2 bills before it was even installed (£125 / £335 :w00t:).

I just had basic line rental and spending 4-5hrs a phone at night, as well as several phone calls in the day!!!

It worked out cheaper than when i was with VM hence the move to BT. and now its even cheaper, on VM our bills were approx £100+ a mth!
Our phone is used horrendously but now with BT for £14.99 i get free calls 24/7

The installation should be OK as I'll be doing it myself. I work for Openreach, the part of bt that does all the installation work.
