Choosing what forum software is like choosing a browser. Its down to personal preference. Oh and beware of the fanboys.

I have used them all and in days gone by it was clear you paid for a better product. Today that is not so and i have gone back to using phpbb3. Specially as the next update plans some big moves. Also the help out there is much better than other software i feel.

Can always pm me if you need any more info.

As for server space you will need a hosting company that support the software for the forum. Not normally a problem as 99% do. When choosing the software it will tell you what to look for. The pricing of hosting can get confusing as it can be based on traffic and data uploaded and downloaded etc. One or two companies do make it a little easier by offering an all in one price. So you know what your paying and if you do hit the big time no penalties will be charged. Like the all in one pricing at HostPapa.

Well once you have chosen what software to run it will then tell you the specification that the host needs. I really doubt it will be a problem with any of the forum software on most host company's.

You just need to decide if you want to pay for the forum software or not. Personally i don't see the huge price justifying the difference from Phpbb3 to say VBulletin. You may think different. The best advice i can give is read and ask loads of questions, plan what you want to do on this forum. All the software is customizable in many, many ways.

i recommend smf over phpbb, better stability, better customisations, better forum support

you need server space with php5 and a form of databases
