There's a suspicious question if ever I saw one ???????

no, you register your console and then they'll know when you bought it and therefore how long your warranty lasts.

See this thread for full details.

Not really, maybe they lost the receipt or it was a gift or they bought it from Ebay - there could be a number of reasons why they don't have the receipt (including suspicious ones)

Yep I personally brought mine from HMV last Oct

I can't remember if I registered it and think I have lost the reciept :(

Hoping nothing goes wrong any time soon

you could buy a new one, take the old one back under the new receipt.
Just make sure its a shop that gives you full refund, not just replacement/credit voucher etc.

Hmmm, its a grey area. It is microsoft who are 'losing' the revenue, but it is their system (and fault) anyway and surely it costs them the same amount, however they fix it. Maybe its even cheaper for them to collect it as part of a retail delivery than send UPS out to his house to collect it.
And anyway, its not a crime if 1) nobody knows and 2) nobody gets hurt
thats our saying on the inside, anyway :)
