Buying a car from Motorpoint - anyone got experience of this?

I'm in the market for another car and I've been looking at a car supermarket called Motorpoint who almost without exception are cheaper on like for like cars than any other seller (including private sales).

Having had an initial discussion with them it seems the reason their cars are so cheap is that they have generally missed their 1st service (usually due around 12000 miles and the cars have mainly done circa 14k to 16k miles) and therefore the balance of the manufacturors warrenty "could" be invalidated!

I'm really dithering because I'm fairly risk averse but there is a credit crunch going on and the chance to save between £1k & £2k on like for like cars is very appealing.

I'm not looking for you guys to source me cheaper cars (at the moment I'm looking at Mondeo 1.8lx or Vectra Life estate 1.8) I'm just really interested in anyones first hand experience of dealing with Motorpoint (I've seen mixed message board reviews) but I trust you guys on here more!

any feedback much appreciated and rep for any useful nuggets

cheers

Graham

One of my neighbours bought a car from here and had a problem with the steering column and they were very unhelpful with it eventually his shall we say persausive father made the company see sense and refund them their money.
This was one of the motorpoints in Scotland.

thanks Imortal...........the tesco scheme has been withdrawn because so many people paid for cars with the vouchers - motorpoint lost a lot of money on this as tesco usually only pays the retailer twice the value as opposed to four times the value that customers get.

esq3585 - I guess that refund would nominally be under "fitness for purpose" & sale of goods act! Thats what I'm thinking my fallback position would be!

Had my current car from Motorpoint (3 years ago, Derby), couldn't be happier.

As you say it was much cheaper than most other places. £14K new and I bought it at 18 months old 8K mileage for £8K.

Can't comment on the service bit as I have had mine for 3 years and can't remember but why would they miss the service? sounds like a myth to me.

Bought a car from them a few years ago. No problems at all despite Motorpoint being 150 miles away!

Car was still under manufacturer's warranty and when aircon failed it was repaired by local main dealer. You really only need Sale of Goods Act if the car has a defect when sold. From experience, I'd say you would have the same problems persuading any garage that a defect existed at the time of sale and that they should replace/refund a car. They claim (quite rightly) that the warranty is with the manufacturer (or warranty provider) and it is very difficult to prove that there was a defect at time of sale.

Motorpoint tend to be cheap for 1-2 year old cars. You could also try Evans Halshaw (who are more inclined to be negotiable on price) or Trade Sales (www.trade-sales.co.uk). If you're looking at slightly older cars, Car Giant (www.cargiant.co.uk) are usually cheap.

We bought the missus' last car from M.point Burnley, got a SILLY good price on the trade in and the car was cheap anyway . . . . . . . .

Phoned on the Tuesday, car was at the Derby depot, drove away it 10.30am that Saturday no probs at all!

Couple of family members bought cars from the Peterborough one last year and have had no problems at all. Excellent prices.

Push hard for a deal as the trade is very slow at the moment. The ball is definately in your court.

I bought a new Mazda 323 from Derby in 2000.

A couple of pointers to buying at Motorpoint, many of " new " cars are not new, they have often been registered to somebody else ( not Motorpoint ), this may well follow through to used cars, they may well have 2 previous owners at an early age.

Many of their cars are imports and have different specifications to UK sourced vehicles, this often has a detrimental effect on their resale value and insurance costs.

Worth bearing in mind.;-)

My elderly neighbour bought a car from Motorpoint in Burnley which was an ex-mobility. He had no end of problems with it which they refused to remedy until I got involved on his behalf. They have now carried out the work and the car is fine and he did get a good deal

I think its the same as any car dealer - you get good and bad stories but if you have any problems stand your ground

Thanks to everyone for your help. I have decided to buy from them! Have paid £300 deposit.......will be travelling to Peterborough to collect it in the next couple of weeks........for anyone interested I got a less than 1 year old Vectra Life Estate with less than 14k miles which I picked up for £6450 less £850 for my car (which is £300 more than anyone else offered me)! Still got 2 years left on vauxhall warrenty provided I have it serviced soon after getting it!

The £300 is refundable if I find a problem with the car when I go to collect!

If the collection is as good as online and telephone then I'll be a happy bunny but somehow I expect not!

You can see why the motor trade is in the poop, that must be worth about 35-40% of it's new value in 12 months.

Good luck and enjoy your 'new' car. My current one was my first' new' car and I loved picking it up.

Dont want to scare you but there was a piece on watchdog about vectra engines failing. May be worth investigating before you buy.

EDIT Article here seems its the 2.2 petrol engine

I bought my car in 2005 from www.allbrandsnew.com

It was pre registered, 0 miles, but £2.5k cheaper than the RRP

Very good service as well :)

If they are taxing it for you then leave it till lunch to collect as the post round here is rubbish. They say about 10am to collect but you would be relying on the Postie getting their on time.

Is it Motorpoint in Derby? If so it might be worth checking out AvailableCar.Com as they have 2 car supermarkets in the Nottinghamshire area, I bought my first car from them and I'm looking at another to replace mine with now. Their service is second to none, trade price on my Citroen C3 were very similar at Motorpoint and Available Car and I feel there was more choice at AvailableCar. Also, I think they give you 1 weeks free insurance (not much I know but all helps) Plus when I purchased my first car, they offered an extra insurance from the RAC free of charge that meant if you write the car off and you dont get enough to cover the remaining finance payments, they will pay it off... This was free fo charge... Worth a look, but having said that a colleague of mine bought a car from Motorpoint and was very happy with the service provided,

hope this helps in some way,

I got a valuation from them, asked if there would be any messing about if I drove down..no..drove down and they started pulling my car to pieces..offered me 3k less than quoted..I said you have one there on the fourcourt a year older with more miles..that 6k more than your offering..c.. men all the way..I took my car an drove it home

Very poor company. Sales team gave out miss information and after sighing contracts I had to pay out an extra £500. Unhelpful and I would not recommend anyone to buy a car from motorpoint (Derby)

Hi I came across this thread while looking for info on Motorpoint. I'm looking to buy an Audi A4 or A5 and they seem to have better prices than anywhere else Iv'e found.
I'd rather buy a 2012 tho as the price will reflect the older year so wondered if anyone knew of a similar place for slightly older vehicles.
motors.co.uk and gumtree are the only places I have found to ckeck.
Thanks

Bought a Nissan Juke from Motorpoint. Day after I got it I found out is was imported. I went through the 'unwind contract' legal route to return the car for my refund. They informed me that nearly all of the cars they sell are imported and they are not required to tell you unless you specifically ask. Upon searching forums I have found that they sell mostly ex hire and ex lease cars.
#25
Was it RHD?

If so, where did they import it from? :|
#26
Yes right hand drive. Imported from Malta. Motorpoint offered me another Nissan Juke from them but only 2 were UK models from around 43 in stock. Took my refund and bought a car from a main dealer.

went to motorpoint in widnes last week ended up paying 299 pounds to have the car brought from newport just to look at. I was told you get a full refund if the car is not right for you. I was after a ford b max titanium as it has sliding doors, I also want reversing sensors on the rear, but there was no picture of the car on their website just basic information. I am worried sick if the car is not what I expected will I lose my 299 pounds ?

I bought a new golf gti tsi from motor point Widnes. They told me it was a import at point of sale but salesman assured! Me that spec was the same as a uk model.built in the same factory nothing to worry about.
I've since realised this is not the case it does not have heated seats, adaptive cruise control, dab radio and KESSY To name a few not only that one of the alloys had been damaged and poorly repaired, basically a accident damaged car. Then when I told them they said they would order a new one when I picked up my car the following day and asked to see the old wheel, after much persuasion they showed me they had swapped it of another car a red golf gtd no doubt someone else will buy it.
I WILL NEVER BUY FROM MOTOR POINT WIDNES EVER AGAIN!!!
Imports are not the bargain they first seem avoid or be disappointed

We have just (6/2/16) dodged a bullet with this company. We saw a car online at a London branch and paid £300 to get it moved up to derby. We were really looking forward to seeing it as it was a grand cheaper than comparable cars and on paper was perfect. The day came and we saw the car. It looked great but.... Upon closer inspection the boot was severely mis set, the bumper wasn't flush with the rear quarter nor were the rear light clusters.there was also a distinct smell of paint inside the boot area. We spoke to the salesman who told us that he knew we wouldn't buy it, the paint smell was polish and the boot could be fixed by adjusting the boot striker. I said well how's that gonna fix the bumper and lights then? to which he replied.. you obviously check your cars too well! I said obviously I don't. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. We won't be going there again. Ever.

I work for Motorpoint dealing with high level complaints, I also tend to the reviews on Feefo.com, our official review platform. We invite all of our customers to review their experiences on this site so were best suited to address and resolve as many complaints as we receive. All the customers that are reviewing on Feefo are genuine, verified customers that are asked to provide a few words on their experience. As you can see the vast majority are positive.

The company has substantially improved it's complaints handling procedures from when this thread first went live over 7 years ago. We now address complaints very differently, taking much more responsibility and focusing on reaching a satisfactory conclusion to any complaint no matter how large or small. We have more than doubled our customer care team size to ensure we can provide the due care and attention that each case requires.

I appreciate that not everyone that has bought a car has a complaint. Currently we don't have an official review system but we do ask for feedback from everyone who provides an email address. If for any reason you're unhappy with your experience be it pre or post sales, we urge you to contact us so we're able to learn from your experiences and improve the company in as many places as possible.

If you have any concerns, you can also contact our customer care team on 01332 426 351, email the team at [email protected] or webchat using the link at http://www.motorpoint.co.uk/customerservices. You can also find instructions to log a formal complaint should you feel the need to do so.

I am happy to personally answer any questions you may have about a potential purchase of a vehicle or address any problems you may be experiencing. Please contact me by email using [email protected] or on 01332 227 207.

I sincerely hope this information will help any current or potential customers.

I am hoping to buy a Ford Kuga 180 Titanium auto from Motorpoint but having read some of the comments I am not sure now. My main concern is that these suv's may be imported. They do seem to have more extras in them than any of the main ford dealers. Can anyone help

Maybe Motorpoint themselves would like to comment on this?

A quick Google suggests that most, if not all the 'new' cars they sell are grey imports.

Checking our systems, none of the ones I've viewed are imported, you should contact our sales team (01332 227 227) if you have any questions. Otherwise email me the stock ID (email is on previous post) and I will give you any information you need.

We bought a Ford Focus estate from Motorpoint last year, 3k miles, like brand new, good price saving for us, nothing wrong with the car at all, we made a good choice I believe.

Me and mrs went round a few car sales looking for a good deal on a new car. All were the hard sell and hard to get anywhere unless we committed to buy. At motorpoint Glasgow last week it was one of the best experiences in car buying no pressure the salesman told us everything about the car being an import left us to go over it ourselves then took us out for test run. Yes they offered a car care package and protected insurance. Which we declined but no hard sell, but we did purchase 2 year extended warranty In the end we got a new renault grand scenic with £1000's off the list price without any hassle. We'll done Glasgow, ps the free latte coffee was excellent too.

Bought my wife's car January 2016, fuses for 12v blown, 1x fr pas wheel needing new.

My 74 year old Dad bought a Nissan X-Trail from the Derby branch Sept 2015 and specifically told them he didn't want an import. Infact he asked on numerous occasions to be told that the one he wanted was NOT an import. Even the manager told him it wasn't. So he bought it. My Dad died in Feb 2016 and now we have received the maintenance and service book only to find that the car is from Cyprus. I phoned their customer services to be told...Yes it IS an import. We are trying to sell it and its a nightmare and has anybody considered the insurance issues. Thank God he wasn't involved in a crash as his insurance would have been void!!

Sorry to hear of your loss, and the hassle with selling the vehicle. I contacted Motorpoint to find out why they have removed the vehicle location from their new website. Meaning you view a car online but you can't find out it's location without contacting Motorpoint. Got a pretty the reply .. We have removed the vehicle location information from the website. Well done Motorpoint, taking motoring back to the 1970s.

FORGET MOTORPOINT...
I was promised the vehicle had a service pack on the day of purchase, but admin staff had finished for the day and would be available next day!, I now have a 65 plate Ford Mondeo, with no vehicle pack or history WHATEVER, head office in derby are a waste of time and will not take vehicle back. I'm in discussions with finance company as I write this, Motorpoint have strung this complaint and deal out for a week , just like I told them I expected BLAH BLAH BLAH............KEEP AWAY FROM THESE COWBOYS............They even had the cheak to take £9 off my refundable holding deposit because of their mistake on the finance agreement...........I'm still waiting for the £9 after a LEGAL Finance Agreement had been signed, and they had no right to do this! FORGET THESE COWBOYS, I will always remember a late friend saying to me Car Salesmen evolved when horse thief's died. So So So True!
