Go for a low mileage Golf if you can, better residual prices and very reliable if its been maintained properly. You'll have a wide choice of Focus' too and that shape is good to drive and quite a few engine variations and trim levels.

Astras will offer value but aren't as desireable and depreciate more, corsa's are pretty common, and clio's (that age range) wouldn't be my choice for mechanical reasons.

depends what u need it for. small car - corsa, bigger car - focus reason being they hold their value better/easier to sell on than the other option, golfs hold value but cost more!

Focus TDi is not too bad.
good car for the money and plenty spares available in salvage yards etc

I've got a Golf on a 99 plate, had it just over a year and it hasnt let me down once. I had a Punto before that and the Golf is 10 times better in my opinion.

Good grief no!!! My friends have had clio's around that age and seemed to go down with electrical faults and the window seals were very noisy and in need of attention.

Focus would be my choice overall, there are a lot about, prices are keen, cheap to maintain (good dealer network/parts common) lots of engine variations etc.

What about Japanese? Civic, Almera? Not the most fashionable, granted but engines and build quality are generally good . . .

My OH had a couple of these, LOVED THEM!!! started with the 1.4 and moved up to the 1.7

Reasonably nippy and should be in your budget for a 98 - R reg to 2000 W reg depending on model/mileage and how hard you haggle!
