Buying a car - need some advice

Hi I am in the market for a new car but don't know much about cars. I have looked at a few cars and want something like a VW Golf (old shape) or a Vauxhall Astra (2004 onwards) and I want a diesel only. I've been told that the VW diesel engines with high mileages will run forever but I'm not so sure so would like clarification please.

I have seen a few on Autotrader, in particular the Vauxhall Astra - a couple of models that are going for quite cheap (around the £3k mark) compared to the rest but they both have about 105k mileage with full service history. Would that be too high? One is an ex cop car that's been owned from new so it's probably been thrashed and the other seems well taken care of. What else do I need to look out for?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Buying a second hand car is a minefield!
Each make and model of car will have its own issues that need to be checked as it gets older. If you are looking for certain models then you should check online with some searches on the model plus some words that would be used for discussing problems, breakdowns, repair etc. Also many cars now have user forums online, which may have sections on known faults etc.

In general

Listen to the engine or loud or strange noises and don't ignore.
Look in and under engine compartment for signs of oil leaks.
Check all electrical features work.
Look carefully at the body work for any signs of crash damage.
Find out story of why it's being sold and judge if they are being honest.
Of the cars I bought second hand, the two duff ones where both bought from dealers (at a private address). The best three cars I bought were.
1. Young woman who loved her car but was finally trading up with help of her dad.
2. Guy worked in car scrap yard getting rid of his own car.
3. Family man come into some money and selling off his old Cortina M2 1500GT (best buy by far)
Finally, when you buy it give it a good service, changing oil etc. Many people neglect their cars as they get closer to selling them on.
Good luck

Hi mate never buy an ex police car. They are on the road 24-7 driven to death at limit ie red line most of the time. Ok they get serviced every 5k miles but that does not help with all the scuffs and marks exterior and interior. Holes where radios have been taken out etc.

regarding buying high mileage cars people concentrate too much on the engine, like anything its how its been looked after, any modern diesel engine especially vw will indeed go forever as long as its properly serviced at the correct intervals and driven sensibly as in not thrashing it from cold and the oil level hasant been allowed too drop etc.etc

what you will be spending money on with higher mileage cars is other things like suspension brakes exhaust small electrical problems so check these out.,if it comes with a new mot it should pick these up if there badly worn though:)

The build of the Mk4 Golf is far better than a Astra..

The MK4 VW Golfs are very good with the right engine..

Look for a 1..9TDI 130bhp or even a 150 depending on budget.

For more in depth info, drop a post onto http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/

Cheers

i swear by vauxhall diesel cars, would buy one anyday, i had an ex rental vectra once, and it was the best car i ever had.
Was cheap to run, hardly went in garage, nippy enough, a good cheap workhorse, didnt look bad either. Ive also had tried a few zafiras and corsa, both nice too.
Dont buy fords, they always breakdown.
I currently have a freelander would prefer a vauxhall to be honest.
