it goes faster than it should

basically it can do a higher speed then what it used to. Say the moped is "restricted" to about 36mph, being derestricted allows them to go faster then that.

It means he can't legally ride it (at 16)

It's not illegal, but I think you have to have passed a different test to a moped test to ride one.

mate had one and it was just a screw to de-restrict it and you could screw it back in, ask the seller if its easy reversible, some are.

It is if he's 16. The bike has to be restricted.

Otherwise you can ride up to the restricted power of a 125cc... but you still need to find insurance for a modified bike.

Steer clear!

Also bear in mind that the strength of the braking system is determined by the top speed of the moped.

If the moped has been adjusted to raise the overall top speed, check the brakes have been improved so that the rider is still able to stop safely.

I'd already put in an earlier post that he can't ride it if he's 16 :)

Depends how far the person has gone.

Could have took the washer out the variatior, then put a new exhaust on, upjetted the carb, put lighter roller weights in etc. Then it isnt so easy to go back.

The bike you are basically getting goes faster than a 16 year old with a CBT is allowed, a lot of 16 year olds do this though. But you will be driving without a licence and without insurence.

Thanks for the input guys! Probably not worth the risk on this one!

To be honest, you will have enough of driving around at the dangerous speed of 30mph within a couple of months and will probably make it go faster anyway.

Restricting them to 30mph is dangerous.

Fine - then don't get a bike at 16. The law is that they must be restricted. Seems little point in buying valid insurance and paying for a CBT if you're just going to break the law anyway!

Police are hot on derestricted bikes - insurance companies too.

Really annoys me when kids do this - parents are usually the ones paying and they don't understand that the kids are riding illegally. Everythings fine until they hit something or somebody...

No. Not illegal but usually voids the insurance if you insure a 50cc scooter.

So it would make it illegal to sit on that vehicle and start the engine on the road? :P

You would be required to declare the modification!
#18
A de-restricted moped is only allowed to be riden by someone with a FULL motorcycle license.

99% of 16/17 year olds do use their 50cc/125cc bikes de-restricted and just do not inform the insurance company. (so basically you are not insured and are paying a premium to have the piece of paper in case of getting a producer) If he/she has an accident and the insurance company check the bike (again 99% of accidents show reports of these teens going over the actual maximum speed that the restricted versions can do, so insurance companies use this as a way out of paying a claim and will look into it if an accident has happened).

I think Sassie was asking if it's illegal to de-restrict a moped, which it isn't. It's just what you do with it afterwards :-D

By law at 16 you can ride a 50cc moped/geared bike that does not exceed 30mph
once de-restricted a moped can reach well over this making the rider illegal until hes 17 years old.

its also true that a high percentage of police dont really know or care and i have to admit i did this to my scoot when i was 16  as does most 16 year olds.

I can guarentee within 6 months of riding a scoot your 16 year old will have found out how to de-restrict it and will do it him/herself as all his 16 year old mates will be doing 40-50mph leaving him behind.

Just remember to run the engine in properly and drill it into him that 2 stroke scooters need 2 stroke oil, not just petrol or it will blow up!!

i havent had mine de-restricted as i was told if you had to claim on your insurance it can make it void.

Cue long story-

I had a 50 cc yamaha DT when i was 16 it was like 35mph top speed for months but then the piston clogged up and gradually, in the end i was doing like 10mph so took it to taffspeed (me local scooter shop) and they put a "big bore" piston in it to enable it to to go up to a speed of a 125cc, on my request.
The ride home was dangerous as hell and i nearly killed myself, i was once doing like 35mph max then all of a suddern it was going at over twice the speed at 75mph
When I arrived home I gave it one more blast around the block, i wanted the speed but couldn't handle the speed, as any biker will tell u the speed on a bike feels 50 times faster than the speed in a nice safe car. Later that day i put it on the freeads and sold it

The moral of the story is...well there isn't one really just thought i would share this story with you :)

The moral of the story is...

"...With great power comes great responsibility"?

It is not speed that kills people; it is inexperienced drivers & riders travelling at speed that kills people.

Id hate to confuse the OP but a BIG BORE kit is a bigger piston and barrel and is NOT de-restricting the bike, big bore is a whole different ball game!

a 50cc scoot de-restricted will be lucky to do 60mph with a race can and clutch weights.

best thin gto do is let him ride it til he feels he can handle more speed and then de-restrict when hes 17 or nearly 17.

Someone is touchy arnt they.

I did get a bike at 16, and i did wait until i was 17 to de restrict it, and i did tell my insurance company.

Calm down poppet.

Wait till he's 17 and get a 125cc bike if you're going to do it, probably safer as limited to 36mph is dangerous IMO on some raods.

31mp/h is the limited speed. 50km/h

agreed my 50 goes 74mph maxed out its unsafe and bad for the engin to be restriced to 30mph
