Buying a mobile phone from ebay or 2nd hand. What if it goes wrong?

Just curious. I've got a deal with 3, where i pay £10/month for 500mins and 100texts for life (simply so they do not ever have to contact me again, or me them) but i don't get a new handset. Price should be £30/month, so i have a bit to play with handset wise.

If i were to buy from ebay, a phone be it brand new in box or used what warranty do i have if summat goes wrong?

Anyone experience on this, any ideas what i would/could do if summat happened? Where would/could i go for a repair?

Thanks in advance :)

You've been ripped off mate, at least three people and myself have been offered 500 minutes, 100 texts for £10 a month with a new nokia or sony phone. This was offered over the last 5 days from retentions at 3.

Anyway, you take your chances buying a phone from ebay but you should be covered by the warranty from the manufacturer for anything that goes wrong. be careful though, if it is unlocked and they had to open it up to do that then the warranty will be void.

Had this since November 07, so not sure about robbed or not. But, my tariff is for 12 months, rolling for life, and the discount is for life......not sure if your's is comparable :? At the time it was the best they would offer......i'm happy with it :)

That's kinda what i was thinking, there's not much recourse is there? I know what you mean about warranty from manufacturer but how would someone go about using it? Lol, don't see many Sony Ericcson store's on the High Street say, so where would it go back to? Does seem like a minefield :?

I purchased a Nokia N80 off ebay and it worked fine, I recently purchased a Nokia N95 and if it goes wrong then I'll take it to a mobile phone shop. A lot of phone shops act as service centres for most brands of phone as they also sell them.

And the repair would be free?

I know its not sony ericsson, but I bought a Nokia N80 from ebay and they came with a 2 year warranty, anyway, it stopped working so just took it to a service centre and they returned it 4 repair, no ask for receipt or anything, got a brand new N80 5 days later! well chuffed

Depends, if you damaged it (water damage) then no, if it had been opened to be unlocked then no. But otherwise it works like most other goods, they have a warranty and as someone else has said you take it in and they repair or replace it under warranty.

That's fine :) Wasn't singling about SE phones, was just an example but what you have said is great :) Thanks. When you say it came with a 2 year warranty, in what sense? A piece of paper, or is this based on the IMEI number? Sorry for sounding so stoopid  Where would i find one of these service centres? They national? I live in that small place Manchester lol, so guessing we'd have a few :)

They know exactly how old the phone is when you take it in, must be tied to the imei

Superstar, that's what i was kinda thinking but for someone else to suggest helps me a lot. As for unlocked, i'll just buy a 3 locked handset then :)
Repped you both, thanks :-D

if you buy an old phone do not expect 2 years warranty. Nowadays you can pick up n95s for £150 and most of them still have some warranty left. A phone which has plenty of warranty is the 6500 slide because it hasnt been released for long should have more then a year and costs around £120.

I take your point Hustler, makes sense :)
Love the look of the 6500 slide, but it's a Series 40.
3 don't have the best of handsets, mind, not sure what i do want as yet lol :)

Nokia e65 is also decent.

the worst that can go wrong is if the handset hasn't arrived and the guy has done a runner. You gotta be careful when buying expensive stuff. I'd rather pay extra for the real deal. That said, if you carry on the 2nd hand business, check the other party thoroughly. Don't want noone making mistakes here :D. Or remain in ebay and get ebay protection, hopefully you have protection to cover if any goes wrong.

Ive brought plenty of phones second hand just make sure you read the description properly and you should be fine.

Thanks again Hustler, i'll see what comes up.
@Artonox. TBH, i am not looking for a 2nd hand phone, but alas all to often even the so called, "just opened the box to check contents" can be, "i've used it for a week and didn't like it", i do want a genuine BNIB phone.......like i say, no great rush, i'll bide my time and see what happens :)
More rep handed out :)
