If buying what I would do is get rid of all the packaging and bring it back as if you went with it,send all you receipts and papers seperate in post, naughty I know but you want to make a saving.

is the apple iphone 3gs £100 in usa?

The 3gs is $599.00 payg plus 7%tax, just looked at them last week in Florida. There is not a big saving to be made at the mo because of the exchange rate. Coupled with the risk of getting caught in Customs and the resell value dropping if you have no original box etc, you save very little in the long run. If it was still $2 to £1 then it might be worth the savings...

Price is about the same, maybe a little cheaper, I'd just take the packaging home anyway in your suitcase. American iPods are a fair bit louder which is a big plus for me, and apple have an international warranty on portable products, eg. ipods and macbooks.

hmm well im just worried as it's a mate thats bringing in back n i don't want him to be fined at customs.

I was looking at macbooks , or i-touch , but aren't apple releasing new OS?

Laptops will have a different keyboard layout.
And you have no worries at customs as long as they cant show that it was bought in america (hence why you cut all the tags off clothes) You could easily buy a new box over here or even better and prob wouldn't cost that much is to post the box back to yourself.
