hi guys.
im in the market for a new head unit (a fancy dvd one)
ive found the pioneer P4100DVD to be perfect for me!
I have a choice of either going on ebay and getting a used one or getting one from USA.
The usa shops on ebay who ship to the UK work out about £150 cheaper than the uk stores (about £300 shipped from usa, about £490 here).
Is there any customs charges im likely to get? or has anyone purchased similar items from USA and hit problems with shipping etc...?
Thanks

Custom charges are hit and miss, you could be charged, you may not.

I'd be more wary about the warranty and how to claim if it needs reapair.

Personally I wouldn't buy anything electrical off ebay, especially from overseas. Too many fakes / duds etc.

If it isn't what you were expecting you are responsible for shipping return costs, which could be costly.

Is this the one at £399 here

Anything over £18 is liable for the customs charge.

You can ask the sender to mark it as a gift, with a value under that amount, but then of course you might be in trouble if it gets damaged and you try to make a claim for a much higher amount!

Anything electric I'd say isn't really worth the hassle from getting abroad, incase of any problems down the line.

if i ordered something off amazon (germany) and it cost lets say £35 would i be liable for any custom charges? i,ve heard that if its within the eu you wont get charged no matter what the cost is , is this true?

Thanks for replies.
Ill try and get a used one off ebay or maybe go for the model below.
I cant really afford more than £300 as i also need a stalk adaptor and iso lead to fit the head unit...
£399 isnt a bad price but still abit out of my budget!
if all else fails ill settle for the 3100 model which has a smaller screen and front USB
thanks!

Why do you need a dvd playing head unit anyway? You can't use it whilst driving.

passengers can though

Errr no they can't, it has to be wired into the hand brake and can only be used when the hand break is on.

Does not have to be wired to the handbrake.

You can have it as long as the driver cannot see it.

Don't do it, custom charges can be +30% the price.

you DO get charged custom fees as well as the courier charges so you get to pay more than just the VAT. And thats even if the packet is marked as gift, as all custom declaration forms have value of item marked. Thats why am not importing anything again lol

^^^You don't always get charged, only if the customs pick your item for inspection.

Ok so...why do i want dvd...
its not dvd i was mainly after it was ipod/iphone functions.
ontop of this i want to control the ipod from the screen, which is touch screen!
this also has usb-in for external hdd's and flash drives.
now if you have 250,000 songs all in albums on a device you would like a screen to scroll through you music right? so you can see a tree-view of albums etc...
i was also thinking of the additional things you can have such as caller display for your phone and GPS (which needs a screen).
the dvd function is also cool because a DVD is also a format for music, you can fit ALOT of music on a dvd disk, which is again VERY useful.
And as a additional extra you can play video from cd, dvd, hdd or ipod.
and you can add reverse cameras and the likes too.

for around £300 id say its a pretty good bargain!
and no im not a chav, im an IT technician which probably explains me wanting more or less an onbard computer and lots of gadgets :D
