Buying Pay As You Go Phone and Having top up £10

Just wondering if anyone knows if you can use the £10 top up that you appear to have to buy when you buy a Pay As You Go phone on an existing sim card?

I'm on sim only and just want a cheap phone, the £10 is useless to me but if I could put it on my wifes PAYG sim then at least we would get use out of it but can't be bothered changing the sim card over every time she wants to make a call as it's only in emergencies, otherwise she just needs it for recieving calls and the new sim will have a different number!
Aaaaargh!

Surely with all the sim only contracts flying around there is a market for JUST a phone! Seems fleabay is the only place left where you don't have to top up.

yeah from any time I have bought a pay&go phone the £10 is a separate card to use anywhere (but on the same network obviously )

Remember that pay&go phones are usually locked to the same network

Depends on the network, you used to be able to, but now it tends to go on the sim that came with the phone and also you could transfer between sims on Vodafone but now they stopped, I think you still can on Orange.

if by chance it's 3 network they give out £10 if you port a number to them

YOU CAN ON VODAFONE, JUST SAY TO THEM YOU HAVE LOST YOUR SIMCARD AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO TRANSFER IT TO A NEW SIMCARD.

GIVE THEM THE NEW NUMBER WITH THE CREDIT ON IT AND THEY WILL TRANSFER THE OLD NUMBER WITH TH CREDI :)

If you buy from a shop just say you want a pay as you go upgrade and they wont charge you the £10 top up

The problem with buying from a shop is they tend to be at least £10 more expensive then online so the saving isn't really that great, having said that I think I will get it direct from the o2 shop, works out a little more but last time I did it they actually have me free credit to put on my wifes number plus I took in my old broken phone and got money off that way.
