They've been making excuses for it since early Wednesday morning, along with various empty promises about fixing it soon. More worryingly, they won't allow you to carry out any transactions over the phone, as they normally do.

Any bank that can't fix a website inside 24 hours, or give some good reasons for not doing so, doesn't deserve to have any customers. And in the current climate, it's probably going to lose quite a few!

Please add any relevant information below.

Have you actually managed to log in? The main site loads fine, but you can't actually log into it to do anything.

Cahoot is part of the Abbey Group ( Santander ) so I wouldn't worry until you see Abbey going down the pan, highly unlikely.

This is an old report from 2004. Today's problems haven't hit the press - yet - it seems.

The article's from 2004, though.

They're still saying today's problem is an IT problem, and have been since early this morning. How many banking IT problems take several hours to sort out, and why won't they let you move funds over the phone, as they normally do?

If they are as financially sound as they say they are, then someone needs sorting out for not sorting this out sooner. The longer they take to do it, the greater the uncertainty about the bank.

Note: I called them about 3 hours ago, they've isolated the problem and are currently fixing it... no ETA... In the meantime you can't use your CC so I hope that they're aren't any good deals coming in!

Time to get a second CC methinks... now what are the best deals..... !

Still down, no explanation on the website, and the phone lines are now closed.

If they had some sort of reasonable explanation I'd be just about prepared to accept the situation, but as things stand I'm getting increasingly worried about Cahoot and its related companies. For a whole day now it's been impossible to get money out, but nobody can explain why.

This morning's excuse from the call centre is that there's been a power failure in Madrid affecting Cahoot , Alliance and Leicester, and other Santander operations! The bank is safe (their words).

Does anyone else feel reassured, bearing in mind that it's been impossible to withdraw money for more than 24 hours now?

I managed to login this morning for 2 minutes, all my account balances were still intact so I think it is probably what they say.

No, I will be closing my Cahoot Account following this episode, fortunately I only use mine on rare occasions.

I think they are excellent, first incident I've had with them in 10 years. At least they have people picking the phones up. If I happens again though.....

Like you, I've been very happy with them up to now. This whole business has shaken my confidence in them, though, particularly as I don't believe the information they've been giving out. I'm not at all sure the staff believe it either, having spoken to one of them earlier this morning.

There is no reason I can think of (apart from the obvious one) for a systems failure lasting well over 24 hours, unless of course there's been a major security/hacking issue. Either way, I now want out of here.

I work in IT and these things can happen if some serious infrastructure piece fails and they dont have adequate DR capability. For instance if the power is disrupted by a digger taking the power lines out or the supplying company blowing the distribution board then there is only so long that the reserve generators will operate. So I can see it can happen (unless they have parallel power suppliers entering the datacentre at different points).

Moving doesn't make a great deal of sense unless you get copies of the tested DR plans for the bank you move too.

I think you've been lied to, as I have an Alliance and Leicester online account and that is fine(both yesterday and today).

It is being rumoured that it is a power supply failure in Madrid.

Don't they have back up generators then?:x

It is rumoured that it should be working again at around 13.30.

Well that is about 36 hours that it's been down.

According to Radio 4's You and Yours a few minutes ago they had a statement from the Cahoot MD apologising and saying the site will be back soon. That's exactly what they've been telling customers since yesterday morning.

So no problem there, then.

We apologise that cahoot.com was unavailable yesterday and today (Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16th October).

The site will shortly be up and running and you will be able to see any transactions you made up until 7.30am yesterday (Wednesday 15 October). Any transactions on your account made after that time will have been actioned but may not display yet so please don't worry. These should be updated over the next 24 hours. Any payments set up to go yesterday or today should be processed as usual.

Once the site is back online and you access your account today, you will be able to use your account as normal. However, transactions may not display instantly but they will be updated over the next 24 hours. Please bear with us as we bring the website back up and running. We are working as quickly as possible to do this.

Had the same email too. What's pretty staggering is that they haven't even bothered to give any kind of explanation as to what's been going on. That will simply lead to even more speculation. What a bunch of useless clowns.

And the secure part of the site is STILL down.

Just an update. Various reports are now appearing on Google News, such as:

This one is interesting, in that it contains the following:

Customers will be sent an email telling them how they can reclaim any money they have lost or penalties they have incurred as a result of the problems.

Make sure you keep some evidence of losses/penalties to make a claim.

The call centre staff are now saying they don't know when the site will be up again, and that they're looking at blank screens. They still can't allow you to withdraw money.

Just logged in and closed down my dormant savings and loan accounts - I haven't used them in over 2 years since they gradually bumped my Flexible loan account APR up from 7% to 17.9%.
