All joking apart, theres no reason this shouldn't be the way forward for FPS games, instead of CG backgrounds/maps real video overlays could be used, how cool would COD be then?

Having said that it would probably never be released as the PC/Thought Police wouldn't allow it classified as being deemed too realistic turning us all in to blood thirsty post conflict psychosis induced loons.

A lot less cooler than it is now. You can't predict where the playing is going to move, so you can only use real pictures for things far enough away that they don't change when you move like the sky or distant tall buildings which is often already done. Anything closer just looks wierd.

Not with you entirely on that, there is no reason why a genuine video/photo overlay can't be used as background agreed moving objects within the field of play would present a problem interms of interaction.

Dont get me wrong the work involved to get the frames and angles matched to what you see would require immense amounts of data and hardware far beyond an Xbox360 or PS3 capable of rendering and re-rendering quickly enough to create a decent experience.
