Calling All Techy Peeps: Changing PHP Pages to HTML / Designing A Web Template

Seen a canny template I wanna use for a little project I'm doing soon, but its in PHP format. Is it easy to save to HTML and then use as normal as edit/update etc from within the HTML file?

If this is not possible, then I may need a favour, in that I may need a template designing. Depending on the design, there may a small fee payable to the designer.

PHP and HTML are quite different, PHP is a scripting language which can generate HTML files - you can save the output from a PHP file as a static HTML file but any dynamic content will most likely be lost.

This link is a good place to learn PHP and for reference as well:

http://www.w3schools.com/PHP/DEfaULT.asP

It's quite a simple and easy to understand language so you should be able to get to grips with it easily if you've any previous programming experience.

With regards to the original query, we need to know a bit more about this template - if it relies on a lot of variable information which is gathered to generate the page then you can't really convert it to html, that's why you have the active php element. This thread is entirely generated from a script system reading a database, you can save this page as an html file and modify but you can't generate it all with a few lines of code.

omg sometimes i think I'm out of my league with this stuff. Ill keep trying tho, if its what you want you have to work hard dont you. I just wish now i would have done computer science rather than Media at degree.

Find yourself a WYSIWYG editor like Frontpage and go from there.

Or hire a student to do it for you for a nominal sum.

WHat are you after doing?
#10
You'll also need to host the site somewhere. ie you'll need a server or server space.

if your meaning me? well, i aint sure. Ive seen a few nice templates on t'internet, and if there were HMTL there wouldn't be a prob, its when the PHP and the like, is when it gets harder to work on

I already have hosting etc, just wondering about templates at this moment in time. a nice little :gift: for anyone who offers a hand!

You have to start somewhere and it's always going to look intimidating, it is very similar to learning a foreign language - initially you won't understand a word of what is being said but the more you hear it and read it you'll start to pick up the patterns and it will become familiar.

The same goes for picking up a programming language for the first time as you can't expect to understand it all the first time, I'd recommend learning basic html first so you know how a webpage is structured. Then I'd move onto PHP as you'll using the PHP code to generate the HTML so you need to have some understanding of the latter. Work your way through the examples typing them out yourself and making modifications to understand what the code is doing. It's quite rewarding when you start to get a feel for it and your code is starting to produce more interesting output.

I am familiar with php and html but purely from a functional point of view rather than design, I produce webpages just to work and don't really bother about how attractive they look.

If you can show me what one of your php files looks like then I can get a better idea of what you're looking for. One of the benefits is that php allows you to enter some parameters and then generate the webpage based on those parameters automatically. I'm wondering if the template files you're looking for work this way. You can't quite do the same with html but what you can do is open the php generating page, enter the parameters you want to build the template then save the resulting file as an html file. If you want to work any further with it you'll need to edit the html file itself.

flash isnt worth the hassle, its slow loading and puts customers off

use html, javascript and maybe some ajax and voila :)

Right, scraping the IRISH THEME idea, for now.

do we have any budding (bored) logo designers. I have a photo (but thats all) of an image I would like as a logo (width 720pxls, height, about 320pxls)

The logo, which needs be designed (price for the best, tbc) will act as the bannner for the top of each page.

Want something fancy, not just flat and boring. something lets, say thats not to tacky! I can add the text on, just really after a nice banner/heading.
