Calling all wrestling addicts , party animals and projector experts!

Hey guys/gals/animals,

It's my husbands birthday in July.. and he's the big 3-0.. I've never hosted a party before, let alone a surprise one.. and my imagination sucks lately!

He's crazy on films, loves to wrestle (it's his life) and rock/metal music (bit of a metalhead!)

I'm thinking so far of having a party with a wrestling theme, getting a projector and playing some footage of his career, his past and some events.

Where can I buy a cheap projector that will be decent enough? I'm a total n00b and wouldn't know a crap one if it smacked me in the gob! What would you best suggest for projecting it onto? I've seen some tutes on creating white screens but would love to hear peoples opinions.

Bearing in mind.. i'm not a millionaire.. that's why i'm on here ;)

***Boring backstory.. skip if you like!!***

I can't even tell you what your help would mean to me. His career was cut short and he was placed in a wheelchair overnight due to scoliosis that he had no idea he had. It's been demoralising the way people treat you in a wheelchair and for one day I want him to feel amazing. In the past week he has undergone intense chiro and manipulation that means he can now walk!! This is like a miracle to us, it's costing a fortune but i'd do anything to take the pain away from him. He's now returned to wrestling as a manager and life is really looking up in a way we never thought would ever be possible. I'd like this to be a year for him to remember and claim his life back.

*********

SO..

any help at all would mean the world to me!

Ideas for the party, projector advice and just general help.

Thank you :)

I know it's going to be said but a projector will probably be best purchased of the bay, really does depend on your budget what you get, but bear in mind how long you intend to use it?
I mean is it just for the party, or will you be using it regularly ? You may be able to hire one possibly from a business rental or evaluation place, I'm not sure where as it may be dependant upon your location.

You can get home theatre projectors eg. sony vpl-hs2/vpl-hs3 (they are older models but can be had for £100-£300), or business projectors.

If you've got a nice white wall, then projecting onto that will be your best bet, I'd hook a computer upto the projector and have a playlist of wrestling videos.

To give you a little background, I've got a sony projector I purchased off ebay and am using it daily for about 2-3 hours to watch dvd's. Projects onto a nice flat white wall and it looks great.

I'm sure other people will give you good answers, but I hope it helps a little!

Thats fantastic, thank you. He's a complete film addict so I know he would use the projector if I purchased one.. I just don't know what kind of thing i'm looking for or what all the jargon means?

Never thought to look on eBay but that scares me a little since I don't even know what i'm doing!

Thank you for taking the time to answer :)

I think the key things to look for are lamp life (how long the bulb will last), lumens (how bright the bulb is I think...), and inputs i.e. what devices you can connect to it.

So you want component, composite, s-video, vga, HDMI etc.

Naturally the more expensive ones will be Full HD projectors, but you can get HD ready projectors that show upto 720p resolution and have HDMI in.

Hope this helps a little more, I'll try another response when I've got a better suggestion :)

If you are looking for a projector I would try asking on the avforums.com as personally wouldn't go near ebay for one.
They have a section for projectors for sale and another to ask all your questions in and they are a helpful lot :)

I have tried a few venues but they're always too small or unsuitable for a party!

Whats up Doc

+1 - what a star

Edit: How about some specially designed/personalised invites - just a little something he can keep after the event. PM if you need a contact number - I know of a lovely lady that would help
