Hi i am hoping some of you hotukdealers can help me on this one.
My mother in law who has a virgin media landline and uses this to call Jamaica sevral times a year for sometimes upto an hour at a time to another landline not mobile.
I know there are cheaper ways out there but not sure where to look.

Unfortunately, Virgin Media are just about the most expensive landline provider for overseas calls.

I am fairly sure that they do not allow by pass providers, so I reckon your MIL is stuck.

Have you thought about switching to BT, free connection offer.

It will be a lot cheaper with BT, either through BT or with phone cards.

Virgin are very expensive for overseas calls

Try this

http://niftylist.co.uk/calls/to/jamaica/landline/

its only 4p per min, you need to dial an access number listed and then when prompted the number. The call will be billed to your bill as normal, i can vouch for it, it does work, i do use nifty.co.uk to call many destinations and you really do pay the 4p per min or even less, the access number may change from time to time, so you need to check on nifty.co.uk for a new access number, easy to use

take a look here , i call all over the world with this

CheapestCalls 4p/min
(0844 428 9898)
DiscountDial 4p/min
(0844 428 9090)
Tele88 4p/min
(0844 909 0188)

just input the country you'd like to call & select whether it's a mobile ( slightly higher rates)
once you decided just call the operators number ( check the rates first ..generally fluctuate no more than 2pence higher or lower ..)
you'll then be invited to enter the destination number
an automated voice will then inform you you would like to call Jamaica.yadda yadda yadda..calls to jamaica are "whatever" pence a minute)
so for instance if you speak for 30 mins ..costs £1.20 ..
sometimes the rates are lower good idea to check website once a week to see who is offering the lowest rates
You'll ALWAYS be told the call rate so if it has gone up , you can always try an alternative number off the list

just for the record calls to Jam-down via virgin cost 79pence a minute !

Later on when you check your virgin bill online you'll see a call placed to an 0844 number and the total time/cost

hope this helps

..eidt: i see nadss already made a similar suggestion.. and in in fewer words..good on you nadds!!

My mum calls Jamaica weekly and uses the post office telephone cards, doesn't seem to cost much

to echo nadss ..yes ..been using for a few years now..works ..make sure all the aunties use it too

not sure about the water meter might be best to leave it unmetered you know
..showering I know is wasteful but the idea of sitting in tub full of muck I've scrubbed off has never appealed to me. Not even the jet system would entice me to tub. Period ! now I know the environmental police are gonna crawling all over this but I more than make up for this environmental footprint in other ways
...I have a wash twice a day as i cycle all over London ..We got taught growing up , you never leave the house without a wash & you never get into bed at night without a wash either..My mum was a stickler for that ..if my pops didn't comply he wasn't allowed to share the marital bed ..was quite funny actually.. growing up ..my dad would lay on the rug and drift off ..mum would wake him up to shower before coming to bed...now to wake my dad up when he's asleep is quite funny ..he begs to be allowed to carry on sleeping!!

Anyway I digress..here are some further tips

make free 0800 calls for free from your mobile phone using this piggyback method
...comes out of your free monthly allowance minutes, actually cheaper than Tmobiles free 0800 offer which takes 40pence out of your call allowance each minute ..say you're on FLEXT 35 which is what £200 of inclusive minutes ..each minute's worth 20p for regular landlines or voicemail but 40p for 0800/0845/080.. so that if you make a 2minute 0800 call directly from your mobile you get 80pence deducted whereas if you call that same 0800 number via 01229330800 you only get 40pence deducted for the same 2 minute long call...basically your monthly allowance stretches more
so for T mobile FLEXTER customers who aren't feeling too lazy & want to stretch their free 08 number call allowance this is quite good

If however you're not on Tmobile then chances are you will need t o pay for 08 numbers
To get around this & be able to call an 0800 number FREE from your mobile first dial 01229330800.
calls placed to 01229330800 will come out of your regular mins since it's a landline.
You can then proceed to dial the 0800 number after the prompt & be connected & not be charged for it as it's coming out indirectly from your minutes

Finally if you need to call directory enquiries from your landline ( some 118 calls are what 65 pence a search) you can get round that by calling 0800118 3733..It's free !!
or 0800 100100 ( for this second number you've got to listen to an AD)

To call directory enquiries free from your mobile using your free mins call 020 7998 4106!!

save all the appropriate numbers to the relevant phones & use them ..you'll realise what massive savings you can make

..for the record the total for my monthly 600minAT/ULtext /MMS/ Internet mobile bill never goes over £8
