Check the power steering fluid is topped up

i would still get it looked at. power steering fluid doesnt get used up like oil etc, if its low, and its serviced regular, then there is probably a leak. any patches under the car in the morning?

On that note I'd like to say the power steering fluid is the worst for gunking up sensors, so i'd imagine its just a gunked up/faulty sensor, worth checking however as steering is vital! :p

first check the bottle , it will have a dip stick in it to check the level , check on line if your unsure as to what it looks like , it wont be a clear bottle if that helps

look at the engine , can you see any liquid around the place , are the belts dry ( dont touch with a running engine )

look underneath the car to see if anything is dripping when the engine is running

do minimal miles if you can and get it into be fixed at the first oppertunity

if the pump does fail then dont worry the steering will just get very heavy thats all

good luck

Not all of them have dip sticks just the more modern cars.

Its normally just a min and max line with very little difference between the two so it can be hard to judge how much is enough!

thats because its not 'used up' if it needs topped up then there is probably a leak somewhere.

Don't panic. If the power steering fails, its no big problem, it will just mean that the car will be heavier to steer. Check the fluid. before you take it in (it's all they will do if there is no leak present). A mechanic would probably take a quick look, change the oil and tell you to come back if it happens again.
