I have read quite a few posts about this and am still totally confused.

Can anyone advise what is the cheapest way to phone while I am abroad to the UK from a mobile. I dont mind if I have to phone another mobile or a landline.

I am on O2 pay as you go but would get another sim card on another pay as you go tariff if it is cheaper.

Will you have internet connection?? If you will then it would be best to use skype - cheap calls or free if you call another computer (can use webcam too)

Depends on whether you have mates rates or whatever but generally it's cheaper to either call the same network or a landline.

my bro is in oz he has a deal with vodafone that every call costs 75p no matter how long
think they called it a passport

From bitter experience, i would advise you to bear in mind that if you are the person receiving a call from an overseas mobile you will also be charged. So if you phone someones mobile who's back in UK while you are away, they will be stung too:oops:

Sorry forgot about this thread (prob cause I am not going away for a while!)

I will not have internet connection and with reference to the vodafone comment from hana21, is this available on payg.

It does not matter to me if I have to call a landline or mobile.

I will try and help.

Recieving Calls
While you are abroad if you receive a call you will be charged

If you have voicemail switch this off, as even if call goes to voicemail you still get charged

Making Calls
Charges vary on the country you are going to, the O2 website will detail the charges.

If you call someone who is back in the UK only you pay for the call

Suggestion
You could purchase a SIM card while in the country of destination

Try sticking to texts, you will be charged for sending but you will not be charged for recieving

O2 pay and u go do offer a service to reduce costs in Europe,it costs £1.99 (My Europe Bolt On) a month, you only need to add for a month. It reduces costs from 99p down to 69p (making calls), 99p down to 49p (receiving calls)and text messages from 49p down to 39p.

This obviously depends on how much you are going to be using it.

Get a local sim card in whatever country you are going to. I travel all over the world and that's what I do.

Also, it's much cheaper for someone to call you on your mobile abroad with a local sim card in. Especially if you use the numbers you can find for free at http://www.telediscount.co.uk. For example, my wife calls me on my mobile phone (with a Chinese sim card) in China for 1p per minute.

There are also usually prepaid "calling cards" that can be bought in whatever country you're in that you can call for much cheaper with.

Hope this helps?

Hi, many thanks for your replies.

Trauts, thats a good idea for when I am in Tenerife for my nieces hen weekend!!!!

Cutthroat jake, thanks my next problem is when I am Jamaica and USA. Do these number things work (the site you advised), I thought I read somewhere that you cannot call these numbers from a payg mobile.

You CAN use these numbers from a UK mobile, but you WILL be charged more than the stated rate. The mobile networks take money too. Remember, these numbers are for people in the UK to call YOU abroad.

Using Telediscount to call a landline OR a mobile (with a US sim card in) is only 1p/min

Jamaica is 5p/min to a landline, or 13p/min to a mobile (with a Jamaican sim card in)

The best way is to use your mobile, with a US or Jamaican sim card in it, for incoming calls and use calling cards, which you can buy from most newsagents etc. in The Caribbean and the US for dialing out.

www.sim4travel.co.uk or www.sim4theworld.com

They provide a pre paid sim card that you can top up and allow you to make calls to the UK (or any other country) for a very reasonable price. They also allow you to receive calls on your mobile in most countries for FREE.

Can't help with cheap calls to the UK, but I can suggest that Post Cards from abroad are sent here in an envelope.. much quicker that way.
