A former Army commander yesterday called for Jimmy Carr to quit for making fun of soldiers who have lost limbs.

Patrick Mercer, Conservative MP and chairman of the Commons subcommittee on terrorism, said certain subjects should be instinctively "off limits" for stand-up comics.

Carr told a 2,500-strong audience at the Manchester Apollo: "Say what you like about servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're going to have a (expletive) good paralympic team in 2012."

Mr Mercer, who spoke to serving troops about the line, said they were "amazed" by it.

"He was one of their favourite comics," said Mr Mercer. "He has spent a great deal of time with troops at Selly Oak and Headley Court, but that just makes it even more bizarre.

"It's not funny and his career should end right now. I understand his desire to shock but there are certain subjects you can't make fun of and one of those is the sacrifice of our troops - especially this close to Remembrance Sunday.

Bit of an overreaction no?

Nothing should be off-limits.

+1

If anyone has ever been to see Jimmy Carr / Frankie Boyle or similar, you know that no-one gets off lightly.

The joke prompted a huge response on the Army Rumour Service website. One poster wrote: "I believe this was probably a line he picked up from Headley Court from the guys in rehab and so feels justified in using it."

Many branded him "smug" but most agreed if the gag had been made by someone in the military it would be viewed as funny. One said: "It's not the joke that upsets people - it's because Jimmy Carr told it."

Good publicity for Jimmy, might go to his show myself now

I've seen him a few times at shows and corporate stuff and he is very good value for money. Comes up with new material every year for a new tour unlike some comedians too.

Laughing in the face of adveristy is a great English tradition; I dount it's the lads and lassies who have been injured that are complaining. they are off getting on with their lives. It is the folk in the media and MPs with tto much time on their hands that always complain.
#9
just as hes been cleared in court of driving his bentley while using his mobile phone.....

lock him up

thanks to mr loophole for getting him off........apparently he was recording a joke into the dictafone in his fone..... not talking!!!!
#10
whatsThePoint
No law against using a dictafone while driving and they would of had his phone call records to check if the phone was in a call

+1

same as eating a sandwich etc

personally think that without comedians like jimmy and frankie you wouldnt here about the bad things that happen as much, so they may joke but at least its gets people seeing the real world, jimmy does do loads of new jokes and one liners every tour which makes it great value for money and well frankie what what can you say about frankie he's a genius
#14
whatsThePoint
Mars bars are bad for you we all know that

i know and ill take that as a swift u-turn:-D
#15
I cant help but think that jimmy probably got the joke from the hospitals that treat these soldiers. Has he ever visited them?

No i take that as you've never adjusted the radio while driving, cut the corner while turning, check your tyres every day as stated in your handbook, etc etc

What about all the jokes about people who have died, isn't that worst yet we all laughed at M Jacksons death, well apart from those who support child molesters

to be fair that was really funny:santa:

Suppose it depends how you take what's said to me he's saying well other people may make fun of unfortunate incidents but they're damn commuted tithe cause and it put in the olympics with all their training amputees or not the would win as their disability wouldn't affect them in the slightest

that's how see it anyways

I'm not wrong at all, you fool, due care and attention yes but not comparative to the actual LAW of using a mobile phone while driving which carries a fixed penalty of 3 points at least.........

maybe if you can stay in context you wouldn't look so 'clever'

you implied you couldn't be "done" for eating a sandwich and you actually can

end of
#22
whatsThePoint
Tecnically if you adjust the radio you are not in full control of your car so just like talking into a dictafone or eating a mars bar you are commiting a driving offence

So yes its the same thing

In fact i would call tuning the radio more dangerous as you look away from the road

so he got off when he shoudnt have then yes.......

youve just proved my point:roll:

lol you need to look up context and understand its definition, I've obviously rocked the caspar
#29
whatsThePoint
He was charged will making a call while driving, not the same as charging him with using a dictapone

So are you saying if your charged with something you didn't do, you should be found guilty

im saying if he didnt have an expensive lawyer, like mr average joe public then he would've taken it on the chin

celebrities would rather spend thousands on a solicitor to get them off......its a joke

Err......

Have they never heard Jimmy Carr's stand up routine before?

If an amputee joke gets him this riled up I dread to think what would happen if he heard some of his more extreme jokes.
#39
whatsThePoint
LOL your really missing the point
He was charged will something he didn't do and you've spat your dummy because he wasn't falsely convicted

i think you are buddy...... i made a flippant comment ....."lock him up"

you took me seriously.....i had some fun

now im bored.....run along little boy:santa:
