Does anyone know when it should be done? How many miles? The car I have just got has done almost 60k, should I do it soon? I called a few garages who have said it will be about £300!!!! What a joke! They said the belt set is £90 even though all parts sell it for £41 + vat. The garage said it will take 4 hrs. I have a friend who may do it for me, but hes not keen (he used to a mechanic in his spare time and has done them before).

On my 2001 Y its 100k, I did it at about 87k.

Bare in mind that its a killer in terms of mistakes - do it wrongly (or let your not confident mate do it wrongly) and the engine could be scrap.

on my 52 plate got it changed at 80k. Remember if it does snap its not really guaranteed. So the sooner you get it done the better. You dont wanna run the risk cos know one knows when it will go.

£300 or £1000's upto you.

Get it done properly. Look at it this way, the belt needs changing every 6 years say. In that time you have already paid £175 x 6 (tax), Insurance (say £250 a year) and MOT's/servicing (say £100 a year). So that's £3150 just to keep it on the road.

£300 is cheap.

Thanks...willl get it done. Not paying the garage, will get my friend to do it! He has done them before although he sais something about 2 belts on a focus or something. He used to be a mobile mechanic, he has done loads of car stuff for me before like brakes, welding etc etc and always gets it through the mot. I cant really afford to pay a garge £300 just paid over £3k for the car

Just done mine at 50k and played safe. Powerdrive or Powertrac kit was about 82 quid and had it done as part of major service. The whole lot with mot was only about 330 although it was a mates garage. You could get the cam belt done cheaper than 300 but don't forget the rest of the car!

I had my cam belt done at 80k on my Vauxhall Astra. Cost me £120 + VAT at my local garage.

On my last car the cam belt went and it eneded up costing well over £1500 in damage damaging all 16 valves!!, work would of cost more then the car's value so i scrapped it! so definately worth doing, maybe ring a few places and get a price comparison.

On a Zetec i'd say 80k max, 50 to be safe (Older ones it's 60k max). Just had the tensioner go on my escort diesel, took out 5 valves. Wife went to euro car parts for a belt kit for it and they sold her one for a 1.6 PETROL CITROEN SAXO. WTF!!??!! One day i'll go in and they'll give me the correct parts, on that day the world will end:lol:

By the way, it's not a bad job to do on a zetec, just need the correct cam locking tools :thumbsup:

80k miles, or every 6 years, BUT, they could still snap anytime, or last well over 100,000 miles.

My focus had the cambelt pack came with the pully and the water pump and tenioners I think but cant remember totally was few years ago. But yeah deffo get it done for peace of mind. Id also get it done somewhere where its guaranteed. As if it goes wrong will your mate fit the bill

manufacturer recommends 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Which reminds me, it's best to get the water pump done at the same time as if it fails you will need to have the job done again......

Or simply buy a car without a belt, get a chain driven one.:thumbsup:

Some garages such rip off- they doubled the price of the part and I seriously doubt it will take them over 4 hours to do. I will have to call around few more places.

Well easy answer, if you don't want to pay out... Do it yourself. It's not like being a mechanic is a skilled job or anything, lazy sods should all be on minimum wage:whistling:

How do you know it wont takeover 4 hours todo??? You tried fitting one before?? Best bet is ring local garages for a quote and see what the average price is. Maybe that is the going rate and they not trying to rip youoff at all.

I disagree. I wouldn't trust the seller anyway! hehe... If it had done 80k, I'd change it anyway. But then I don't pay labour costs so its all good

If the seller produced a receipt, I'd trust him, after I'd checked it was new myself?:-D
Remember the OP's has done under 60K, she could just have it checked for signs of wear at this stage, if she wanted to save money?

I think £50 labour a bit steep for mechanics dont earn £50 an hour! Anyway found somewhere thats £200 now!

That sounds a good deal to me. :thumbsup:

You'll still have to decide whether to have the water pump replaced as well though?

Water pumps can fail, and your' coolant runs from your' engine when they do, to replace one would mean re-fitting the timing belt, as the belt drives the water pump, as well as the camshaft.

I'd get a further quote for fitting a new water pump as well, it could be a good idea, if you intend to run the car for a few years?

£50 is about the going rate. Did you get a quote from ford? Think they charge about £70 an hour:? Make sure that £200 is an all in quote and not an estimate:thumbsup:
