I am looking to go to Camp America next summer. I was wondering if anybody had been here, or done something similar, and could give me some information or recommend any alternatives. Thanks

Whichever kind is the total opposite to the one micoo goes to...

I looked into this when I was at uni a couple of years ago, put me off when I found out you sleep in the same cabins as the kids, seemed a bit strange to me and I like my 'escape space'!!

Plus you're pretty much working for pittance. you go for the experience, not the cash!! You have to pay them to get there for a start and don't really earn that money back.

But my friends who've gone said yeh, it was hard work, but an amazing experience and looks good on their CV...still can't get jobs though...

Anyway, yeh, go for it! but look into like CCUSA and other companies too as they all offer different perks. And for anyone fancying staying in the UK, PGA camps are great fun. x

Yeah the kids part seems quite strange to me too. Yeah its not a money thing for me, its all about the experience. I am also thinking of going to a soccer camp as a coach. Dont know which to go to

Thanks for the info btw :)

Looks like a promotional brochure for cheap, semi-child labour, something that America will be needing more of in the near future.

Good luck.

I think there's so much you can get sued for these days it's a risk I didn't want to take, plus Like I said I'd need my own space to go to, not have to worry about if they're snoring or wetting the bed!!

I think CCUSA have separate sleeping quarters, can't remember, like I say, worth looking into.

Soccer's OK, would you ever be able to look at a footall again though after a summer of it? lol.

My gf went with BUNAC basically the same as camp america as did a friend in the summer past. Basically you dont chose what camp you go to, you are picked by the camp. Think long and hard about it though, 7-10weeks might sounds great but it is a long time to be away from home.

Micoo is tirelessly bidding for my affection. He loves me more than he loves himself.

Anyway. My friend did Camp America this year and loved it. For me it's between doing this or travelling Europe in the summer.

Lol, it's not something I was planning on! I just thought it was a close proximity, maybe I'm paranoid but I avoid situations like that lol, as a teacher I knew about child protection issues and the parents that will sue the ass off you for no reason.

Anyway, we're getting off the point, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Check if your school/ college/ uni are having spokespeople in, they usually do visits around March time to sign up newbies.

The good thing about this is that you get the time after you've finished camp to do whatever you want before the Visa kicks you out. So I'm told. I want to go to Canada.

I'm a realist, I say it as I see it. Make sure you visit Jesus camp whilst you're there.

I went on Camp America and when It comes down to it they do take advantage of young inexperienced Students. Imagine all the rights you have here when you work, they don't really apply on Camp america. Don't get me wrong you will have a good time BUT they will over work you. Expect to work all hours and have as little as half a day off, you can't be ill or you get sacked. I was a mountain biking instructor, I did more work than when I road professionally with no recovery time or correct diet provided. They have you in a particularly precarious position in that you are stranded there so they hold all the Cards with threat of having your visa revoked a constant possibility. (In many cases actually in the middle of no where with only what your camp offers).

The phase take the first job offer will definately come up your 'interview' this is nonsense be choosey no religous or handicaped unless you want to and have particular experence. Don't get me wrong I was keen for any experience and all accepting but I was expecting a more even handed approach like here in the uk, you will not get this in the US. I was expected to strickly observe a religion which I did not partake in. e.g not allowed to leave on Saturdays or drink or smoke, read allowed prayers daily, the teaching of non darwinain science etc etc. Some of it deeply hard to swallow.

Pay, don't expect to make money I spent over 1000 pounds even before I was paid a pitance of 1200 dollars for 4 months work about 800 pounds at the time. This worked out as about 50 cents an hour.

My MAJOR recommendation is to ignore Camp America type programs and assuming you part of a university go for specific programmes. These are a lot of time offered to you when your in a team e.g Football Coaches or Hockey coaches these are smaller programmes were the kids just come to you for coaching of some sort. The set up means you are valued alot more as a individual and for your skills and are treated as such. Without the strict restrictions with having the childrens around overnight you have alot more freedom with excactly the same great expericence.

P.S what ever you'll do you'll have a great time with kids and you'll want to go back like I did. But if you look about it objectively Camp America and other types are basically selling something that isn't worth anything , an application service, and they have done there best to make as much money as possible. You can apply yourself to the individual camps , like everyone does when you want to go back cuting camp america completely out and your wage e.g jumps from $1200 to $4000 to upwards depending on responsibilty skill etc, just go to there individual camp websites or give them a ring and ask them it's just like a normal job. Thats what the American Students do. If you ask anyone the'll just say it was great but just be smart and don't get taken for a ride.

Hope I've helped. :)
