Stay away from Italian Beaches

Towel-covered body lies on the sand as beachgoers barely bat an eyelid
A body, covered by towels, lies under an umbrella while holidaymakers carry on sunbathing. At first glance these photos seem like any other happy beach scene. Sunbathers bask in the heat, chatting to friends, applying sunlotion and going for a dip in the sea

The Hotel Leonardo in Pisa is good value for money and clean.

It's only a 5 minute walk from the tower.

A taxi from the airport is under 10 euros and they take you up to the door.

I stayed at the Antica Torre on Via Tornabuoni... very nice and amazing roof terrace, but not sure about your budget. Check it out on tripadvisor

The Royal Victoria Hotel is right by the river so if you are at the front you have a river view and if you are at the back you have a view of the tower.. very grand for a 3 star hotel and well worth checking out as the rooms are HUGE!!

one thing to look out for though is if you book a taxi from the hotel to the airport they wont come in and look for you, they wait outside with the meter running.

In Pisa, we have stayed here:
http://www.grandhotelbonanno.it/
A bit of a funny location but within easy walking distance of the monumental square.
We find that tripadvisor does a good job with reviews.
Last month we stayed here:

in Florence and can recommend it if you are confident enough to use the public transport ( which is excellent)
