Can anyone help? Bone Marrow needed.

I'm not sure whether I can post this here, but surely it's no more off topic than pumpkins and caturday?

I've just found out that someone of my age from my hometown, Nathan Hancock, has contracted a rare form of non-hodgkins lymphoma and urgently needs a bone marrow donor to defeat it.

they are requesting as many people as physically possible to join a bone marrow register with the Anthony Nolan Trust http://www.anthonynolan.org.uk, or the National Blood Service, http://www.blood.co.uk.

I am a frequent poster, so not just spamming up the boards, but perhaps this message might influence just one person to try and help. and that might be all he needs to save his life.

Without a matching bone marrow donor he will die.

His background is west indies/white, but a donor from any background may be a match.

For more information on Nathan, there are links on our local papers website ; http://www.skegnessstandard.co.uk or his facebook group; http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=35955070753

Thanks for reading and I hope this doesn't get expired.

His website is here; http://www2.lincolntoday.co.uk/nathancampaign/help.html

Anyone know how they test for this? I'd be up for it I think

I reckon I'm too old to give - but I wish him well. HUKDers are a very generous, helpful group of people so I hope they come through for this request too. (I will if I find out I'm not too old!!)

It`s a blood test, quick & painless, unfortunately I can no longer be a donor due to illness.

Info here.

To start with only a blood sample is required, some details here.

Would they take mine? I cant give blood due to anemia but would they take my bone marrow?

Id do anything to help others

its amazing how there are so many people on the register and not one is a match, science is amazing in many ways but thats kind of mind boggling. And to think that you could be the ONLY donor for any one person in the world is also an intense thought.

from anthony nolan website 'medical criteria link'

ANAEMIA
Generally Acceptable
No - especially if there is a history of persistent anaemia or if someone is regularly anaemic i.e. more than three times a year.

Exception - you are only temporarily or rarely anaemic, you are not taking medication and you haemoglobin count is within the accepted range

Shows how individual everyone is doesn't it? Every single person is special and unique but also the same as many others in some respect or other. It takes a special person to donate bone marrow.
A thread to make us think and, perhaps, act.

curvy_chicka,

Could you edit your title to remove the "Off topic" part. You have as much right to post this thread as anyone else has to post a caturday etc thread. :)

Thanks everyone, I've just nipped out (thats a story for another thread!) and returned to some lovely comments from everyone.

I'm not too sure about changing the title- I think the right people have responded so far, if I were to take the 'off topic' away I would probably have trolls asking how much of a 'deal' this is etc. But thanks for the suggestion.

Oh and thanks for the rep, I gave blood 3 times but fainted every time so cannot do that anymore, but if I can help him I will.

Im a doner already have been for 22 years and bin called up twice and I hate needles!!! :w00t:
In fact nurse saw colour of my face 2nd time and asked me if I really wanted to do this!!!
Mind you you don't feel a thing once you've fainted!!! Welcome to it if i'm a match they will send kit out automatically if computer matches us up! How I dread that little white box with the needles in but it don't cost nuffin apart from some smelling salts for me!

Good Luck i'm sure you will find someone:thumbsup:
