hello, anyone knowledgeable with fitting light switches, had a nightmare with one in particular.... its a upstairs hallway switch which controls the landing lights but also has another switch on it which controls the lights in a bedroom. I'm trying to buy a relacement switch but cant find out whch one i need its not a normal 2 gang 2 way switch!

Its a retractive switch on one site with 2 x l1, l2 onnectors, and on the other is just a normal switch.... i cant seem to get a switch with both of them on the same switch and want to figure a way around it, on the otherside of the wall is single switch is also connected to another switch in the bedroom. I tried a 2 gange normal switch but cant get my head around that all the lights wont swith off or on from different positions, how can i get round it???

this is the old switch

you don't need to get a switch with both types on you can use a normal 2 gang 2 way and just wire it as a normal switch

hi i spent a hour wiring up diffferent configurations and coudl get the lights to work but not all as they should, on the landing there is this switch and another upstairs and these work on and off, downstairs i have one controlling upstairs aswell as downstairs..

I had the yellow in the COM and the blue in the L1 which controls the bedroom. the only ones i have left are a blue wth red sheath x 2, 3 red wires.... i even wrote down which wire goes where but i think i made a mistake on one of the red wires!!!!

Use a normal 2 way and piggy back the live (ie use a bit of wire from live on first switch to live on second)

Use one live to the 1st switch and then the bit of wire from the 1st to the 2nd to keep the circuit going.

The red wires are live

try this site seems to answer your question
the other switch is called a intermediate switch. (3 way lighting switch in middle to cross wires)
http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/three_way_lighting.htm

A replacement switch with both types

theres your problem

your original switch is a two way , and one single swtich

the new switch has 2 single switches

notice - on your old switch 4 connectors on the left, 3 on the right

new - 3 each side

a double switch, with 2 - 2 way connectors will suit you fine, you dont have to have a switch with one of each, but you do need a 2 way switch

Looking at the way the red wires have been half inserted I would get a qualified sparky in before you cause some serious damage.;-)

Why pay a rip off sparky, its a simple job to work it out yourself.

thanks for all the replies, was going to try to sort it out myself this weekend but as i say i spent a good hour on it last saturday trying to work out different configurations. Do you think i could use some additional wire to bridge the one of the terminals. or have i misunderstood whats happening.

sorry nother question, ive seen on this site you can buy modules, so techincally i need to buy a module which a 2 way (think its classed as intermediate switch)

something like this
http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/VL103SW.html

so i can leave the other switch module on it and replace the other one with something like this, probably would help if i could get a GET module..

also stumbled over this, cant work out if this is correct...

saves having to get the council out to certify the work. Not sure if this applies if you are changing a light switch.
