Can anyone ID this baby animal?

bod emrys Avatar

Found this little fella in the garden - he's about 6 inches long and his eyes are still closed. He makes a noise a bit like a kitten, but we think he looks more like a ferret or maybe a polecat??

Can anyone shed any light?

Don't think they'll be interested if it's a wild animal

Yup, we are trying to feed it soya milk (on the advise of a vet that we know) - sent him pics too, but he still wasn't sure what it was.

It's been crying for days, but we've only just found it - don't think the mother's coming back :(

The parents will probably reject it now as its been handled. Take it to a vets you may have to hand rear it and that is very hard work.

especially if it lives to the stage where it has teeth

Haven't handled it with bare hands yet - don't know if that makes a difference?
#23
just in case you missed it........... it's a weasel.
#24
I think that all we can do is take it to the vets in the morning (if it makes it through the night) - don't think that the vets emergency service would be too interested as it's a wild animal.

Will update this thread if there's any developments.

Thanks all :)

makes a big difference, animals recognise through scent and would normally reject an animal handled by a human, but as you say its being crying for days does sound abandond,it looks very healthy in saying that you sure its just not crying at times when perhaps the mum was away looking for food

Nice one, thanks a lot!

Looks like the mystery is solved :)

Just googled some baby weasel pics and it certainly looks similar.
I didn't know that there were any weasels around here - don't think I've ever seen one before.

Damn it, well it looks like its a polecat or a weasel, they both look very similar on the pics that I've found.

It doesn`t make any difference at all to the animals. The old advice that animal parents abandon their young if they smell `human` is a myth.

I`d still wear gloves when handling them, though. It won`t have teeth yet (as it only looks a few weeks old), but you don`t know where the little beggar has been. ;)

I don't think it is a weasel. I googled some images and the nose doesn't match. The nose of a polecat does though
