We stayed at the Clarendon Hotel a few years ago - which was fine and very central. Its at the west end of Princes Street on Shadwick Place - so not far from the station and right by Princes Street. I know it's not relevant to your needs, but if using the Airport bus shuttle, there's a stop right outside the hotel too.
I would prefer to walk to hotel if possible, neither of us drive and we are getting the train down just for a day of shopping so need to be central to the shops!
Waverley Station is on Princes Street at the east end. You're right in the middle of town so prices near there are high. How far would you be able travel from the station? Do you want to walk or jump in a taxi for a few mins?

There's a Travelodge right beside the station (across the road a bit) at Waterloo Place - not sure what its like, its not been open that long though.
Sorry pressed delete instead of edit! The station is right onto Princes Street so you can either go east end or west end. East End you have Travelodge at Waterloo Place - easy walking as you walk up the rampway from the station and turn right onto Princes Street then along to the right at the bottom of the Bridges. Don't go up the Waverley Steps - it'll kill you! Especially with a wee one and luggage.

West End you have Premier Inn at Haymarket though that would be walking the length of Princes Street and further along. Its not far to walk normally but it would be a struggle if you have luggage etc. Maybe worth checking their websites for prices and maps etc so you can see the distance?
